So let's be honest with ourselves. DUST was not a very good game. It had massive technical issues, terrible balancing, way too slow of any kind of development, had a tiny player base; it just wasn't a great game. Solid 5/10 with some great things in it (the fitting system, the feeling of ownership) that were marred by some pretty significant issues. I loved the and had fun with it but we gotta be honest.
However, the "Idea that was DUST" is what kept many of us playing. That one day, it was going to be this huge massive thing. Maybe better integration between EVE and DUST (DUST mercs getting a resource that is useful for capsuleers and caps making items for mercs, perhaps) or just the hope that the game would transcend from the PS3 into the PS4/PC and get a larger market share and fix a lot of the issues. The "Idea" that was the true New Eden FPS; streamlined to still fit the gameplay but still more complex than most other shooters.
In your opinion, is that ever going to happen now?
My take: I don't think it really will. Nova is being set up as a lot more of a enclosed type of game, at least last we saw it. More focused on the smaller maps and frantic fighting that Call of Duty has popularized. Now Nova is probably at least another two years away and it can certainly be modified to be more DUST-like but I think it is more likely to become just a little shooter meant to be played when you are doing other stuff in EVE. I don't expect we will ever get that large scale thing that we had all hoped for. Another reason is because Nova will likely want to distance itself from what DUST was trying to do not only because the game wasn't all that successful but because, well, we have a lot of Aurum, SP, and money spent into DUST. CCP is better off saying "Nova is totally different than DUST; see, it has a different scope" in order to wash away a previous 'failure' and to not have to deal with the headache of whatever the hell Rouge was originally talking about with "applicable transition."
It is just easier to make a smaller, shooting game on the PC and not have to worry about any indications that this was, in any way shape or form, DUST. I would not be surprised if when Nova is completed and released as a beta, there is a big push like "we learned so much with DUST. Our first priority was making the game fun and the next priority was 'making sure the game is not DUST 514.' We feel that we have succeeded."

Dust's "poor balance" was all down to the skill of the players...
If I can get 20 kills in a match with a facking medic starter fit, does that make me unbalanced? #SkillIsUnfair.

I think it is more of a possibility than people are giving it credit for.
First of all, I loathe the notion it is becoming CoD. Its not. CoD is a twitch shooter, and at no point was it mentioned that a short TTK was a goal.
Just because maps start small doesn't mean they will end there. We can't even say how thwy will be, having only a demo to go off of. All we know is that they will be in, and on ships in space. And given what we know of EVE ships, some of them can get pretty large.
Lastly, if you read Pokeys blog, which is essentially a transcript of a Discord discussion, I find what is being discussed much more complex than you see in a CoD type game. Just the notion that goals and objectives will be more important than individual stats and achievements is counter to a CoD game.
I think it is just fear talking, and I would advise not to give in to that before we even get an Alpha.

They already said Nova is entirely different. No system is being transferred directly. Some things are being moved and modified, other things axed entirely. Some things are completely new.
It's hardly the developers pushing that Nova is Dust 2.0. quite the opposite. If anything it's the players who are wrong assuming it will be the near exact experience.

I can't speak for others, but I can say it isn't fear for me. It has been a growing lack of faith in CCP starting about 6 months before shut down (EvE-side as well, btw). I used to be very optimistic, constantly giving the benefit of the doubt to intent and direction of one thing or another. Even when I stopped playing some months before the end, I would still regularly check the boards and push back against angry naysayers. I remember arguing against posts that would draw lines in frustration, or assume the worst based on speculation.
It's not fear; it is learned behavior and a heightened sense of frustration.
DUST is gone and is not coming back, which answers the question from the title of this thread. As Pokey just noted above, CCP has stated NOVA is different and will not carry over. NOVA will be a different game, with a different soul. That's fine. It is what it is, for those of us still lingering hoping to find home. Yeah, I'm laughing at myself for feeling so "emo" over a game, but it most certainly was something special and unique.
I think some players are desperate to fill the void with the excitement that DUST, for whatever reason, seemed to provide. And they (we) hope. I still hope in other ways, that NOVA can fill the shoes DUST left behind. Not as a comparison or a replacement---not at this point at least---, but just to be something new and as unique and special. You can't really replace the greatest dog in the world that just passed away. A new puppy can never be that dog; but, maybe the new pup can bring something else to the table to then earn its place at your side as another best friend in a long line of cherished best friends. That, or one day you take it to an open field to play fetch ...with a .22 and that will be that.
I hope that NOVA makes it past the chewing stage.

I was answering the question in the post, which was less a literal interpretation of Dust as it was on the PS3, and more the "Idea of Dust," which he describes in some detail.

I get not having faith in CCP. I certainly have reservations about the top management of the company. BUT what I do have faith in is Rattati et al who took a game that looked dead at FF 14, after the release of the very unbalanced 1.8, and managed to make somewhat profitable, and a broken hunk of junk into something resembling balanced.
The reason I think Joseph's "Idea of Dust" is possible long term is because of Rattati and Co. The reason I wouldn't give a percentage of likelihood is because of Hilmar.

Love and respect for the sentiments.
Dust for me is like that. Can not be replaced.
Nova will never be dust 2.0

I wouldn't say it's a different soul per say, just a different shell. Features may be different but I think the soul of a strongly community fueled FPS with a long-cycle progression system will remain.
Just wait and I see, I think once you see the big picture you won't be disappointed. A lot of things look very different at first glance, but as you know I've dug deeper into all of this probably more than anyone, and a lot of the changes make sense while maintaining the core value behind the system.

What I liked most about Dust was the fitting system, and the skill tree. The shooting was meh, but having the 2 things I mentioned earlier take different kinds of effects on the field was very satisfying.
If they dumb those things down too much, it may just be a turn off for me. Other than the Civ, T1, T2 variants in suits, I think everything else might be tiercided (lol?) which doesn't hurt variation, and in some cases encourage it, so I don't mind it too much. However, with the absence of a skill tree, a player will have to play to unlock stuff, and there are no longer Stat Builds (that is, deciding which modules are more vital), but rather it unlocks linearly, and that's boring because everyone will have access to the same amount of stuff at the same time (or new guys will have much less stuff than vets ala dust lol). This is boring. I'd rather unlock a Code Breaker rather than an Armor Plate first, but it seems Nova won't let me.
I suppose the only thing we could do is wait for this set in stone, or the actual game to release. Either works at this point in time.

If Nova ends up being free to play, then I would guess no. If it is being made to sell, then maybe yeah. For a free game DUST offered a heck of a lot imo, they were ambitious, just couldn't perfect all the variables. So this time if it's free, it will be streamlined imo. I do think it will be fun unless it ends up being a 'corridor shooter' though. I mean c'mon, we have some of the best gear in gaming.
