Seems people like the idea better than anything else mentioned, I want it looking right. Fixed hmz... The concept of an Australian server means we haven't gone to single shard. That's fine for a lobby shooter, but if we want to be able to play anyone anywhere within New Eden, distributed servers based on player region will not do it. |

wat? If we have an Australian server (I'm Australian btw), then that means we could only ever fight against other Australians, regardless of where we were in New Eden. That's fine for a lobby shooter, if that's all you want. I'm hoping for Nova to be more like EvE in that we can go anywhere in New Eden and fight anyone who is there, either planetside or on stations or ships, regardless of where they physically live in the world or what server they're connected to.
In EvE, the servers host complete solar systems - there are no servers for different real world regions. Yes, that brings in lag, but we already had that with people being able to connect to battle servers for other regions.
People who only think in terms of a lobby shooter will not see the point in this. Only people who think in terms of the fully open environment of EvE would see this as important. I know I'm probably in the minority but that's the way it is for me. |

No I quoted your post, not DUST Fiend's because it had the right presentation of Waifu in it.
What I was really focusing on, though was this:
"Australian server with AFK kicking powers"
That implies an Australian regional battle server. Or did I read it wrong? I know you didn't write that, it was just quoted in your post....
Sorry for the confusion. |

I completely understand where your coming from. A single shard would be fantastic and more like Eve. I'm just concerned that if it does turn out to be just a lobby shooter we Au Tz players might get screwed again. I find automatic matchmaking is a huge problem for Au players like myself that sometimes work nightshift. When searching for a game at 1am in AU generally it will result in a never ending search for a game. The ability to choose a different server and just put up with the terrible lag is a must have. I will still be playing If it turns out to be single shard and laggy for AU tz, but I have a feeling there will be many players that will not even bother playing due to lag. Agreed that if we have a lobby shooter, a single shard without an AU TZ server may be an issue. However, remember when we would connect to a server during that region's quiet times, it was hard to find anyone there at all. I'm thinking Asian, which was supposedly the one Australia was "closest" to - a joke in and of itself - we were still almost as far from that one as the other two.
Matchmaking only really could work with large numbers of players. If you have regional battle servers you automaticly restrict the number of players on any one of them - unless of course, you allow people to connect to any server they like, in which case we would have a recurrence of everyone crowding onto the US server because that's where all the players are, so that's where we would get the matches.
If on the other hand, we have a true single shard, and the "battle servers" are just the same EvE servers that host the solar systems we are in from session to session, then we would only have network lag to contend with. |
