Always Bitter Vet here.
"The game is alive" is pretty much the same thing they said about Legion/DUST at FanFest 2015. Even if this is something that can honestly be said as "no, we can actually be sure *this* time!", the delay is going to make something inevitable and with nearly no concern from CCP.
We ain't getting anything from DUST into Nova. No SP, no earned items, no bought items, no ranks that we worked/bought, I would not even be sure if we actually get our names.
This is something that beyond anything else, even the absolutely terrible DUST keynote that was such a disaster it torpedoed the game's chances, has me the most angry/annoyed. DUST was slowly dying for a Hell of a long time as CCP kept pushing for more and more micro-transactions. APEX suits and Warbarge and more and more, all being pushing down our throats at the same time that the 'promise' of "there will be some migration of 'stuff' from DUST to X."
Waiting another 2-3 years for what Nova is supposed to be will make all those DUST players much less likely to care about that. Beyond anything else, that is what gets me the most. Because that can't be described away as "well, we couldn't do it on PS3", "we were unable to", "the game wasn't profitable", etc. That is just pure deception of the players and customers, assuming that is actually what happens. I would give it 95% chance.
But here is the one positive thing I think I can muster, that also has a huge potential for also sucking: "The game wasn't EVE enough" might mean that the cramped quarters with kill streaks game we saw in 2016 and was quite similar to Call of Duty is not what Nova is going to be. "EVE enough" might mean we can look forward to fitting slots, managing power, dealing with skill points, the part about DUST that I truly believe to have been the most successful: the ability to mix and match a suit for a particular purpose. I remember making Heavy suits with dampeners because it meant that I could get within about 15 meters before showing up on medium suits radar so I could 'kind of' sneak up on people, Caldari Scouts with a bunch of range enhancements so I could unstealth behind a building to get an accurate count on the amount of enemies in the area before proceeding, 5 or 6 different Tank builds meant to perform better in specific situations, not to mention my all time favorite suit of the Jumping Caldari Assault.
Those suits might not have been the best way to play but the option and capability that it allowed was magnificent. If Nova doesn't have that, in my opinion, it can never been seen as a spiritual successor nor a New Eden FPS.
And here's the downside I see. EVE is a slow, slow, methodical game; massively interesting in design and what the actual game is (Facebook social game with more intrigue) but playing it can often be incredibly boring. If that concept of espionage, slow methodical play is pushed into a game where I could just solve my problems by shooting it, I don't think it will go well.
So, no real change in feelings. "It is still a thing" doesn't give us any other information. I must go back to Eddie Murphy's cracker example again: https://youtu.be/wRXq8TKq-a8?t=7s
