I choose not to buy and support these ****** titles. I bought Overwatch and am more than satisfied. I'm looking forward to Tekken 7 in June. Nothing else has been on my plate.
However, in terms of persistence. Most FPS don't care about it. They want fair fights that come down to skill. So having inherently better gear because you've played longer than someone else comes across as lousy to most players. Dust was not a pure FPS. It's an MMORPGFPS. Basically Runescape & Battlefield smashed together. It was a pioneer in the field, but it failed badly and CCP lost a lot of credibility in a time that it needed it. It will probably be a while before any MMORPGFPS comes along because Legion promises to be a lobby shooter that is built to appeal to the majority of players and be profitable rather than go for a minority of players.
Not 100% true.
More like half-truth in regards to that last bit there.
CCP showed a basic FPS with Project Nova, but they also said (repeatedly) that this was not the final product and that they are sticking to basic during the early stages of its development because not doing so was the exact reason Dust 514 failed so miserably. Dust was a unique shooter, but it was a crap shooter. More bugs than in Starship Troopers and that was just the beginning of its end. Sure, it was connected to Eve Online and had an extremely diverse fitting system that often meant that not a single fit was the all-powerful-go-to fitting for players as well a community that was unlike anything else in the FPS market, but the game itself was quickly diminishing in re-playability. The gameplay was becoming less enjoyable as time went on.
In time, almost everyone began to agree that CCP (in hindsight) should have focused on making the core FPS gameplay work great FIRST and then move on to implementing the unique features that made Dust 514 stand out from the rest.

Plus:
In my book pretty much all FPSs are dumbed down, and Dust was the only one I would bother playing, precisely because it wasn't. That's why I have little faith in Nova, if it's going to be basicly an initial offering which is basicly a dumbed down version of Dust. I'm really only interested in Dust, revamped, made even better, on a newer platform (PC/PS4) and smarted up, not dumbed down.
CCP is done experimenting. They took forever to create Dust and it left them with nothing. They want results. A standard lobby shooter will give them those results. Hence they will go for that model.
Actually, Dust 514 did give them some good results. CEO Hilmar said it made them a profit. Though it is debatable that it probably wasn't by much, it still meant that CCP got something out of it in return for their investment in such development.

It is so bland compared to what it used to be. It focuses on creating something pretty, but the story telling has gone way downhill, because they try and crank it out yearly.
Look at Fallout 4, while technically an FPS, it is single player and story driven. It created this great big world, but you could finish the story in just a few hours.
Consider all the major sport franchises. Madden and Fifa just tend to slightly iterate.
These games are huge cash cows, that cost a lot of money, and companies are so afraid to screw up that they don't want to take chances, and they want to release a game every year to justify people spending the full price of a new game.
Unfortunately it is the nature of the industry right now to make safe, and boring choices. Nailed it. In short, as game budgets increase, the risk associated with them also increases. That being said, companies investing a lot of money are going to want to make sure it's something that's going to deliver a returned. Namely....make when you know has worked in the past. This is why so many games feel "same-y" when a developer releases a "new AAA title". No one wants to take risks when you're dropping tens of millions of dollars...they just want to guarantee a return. This is also why you tend to see indie game developers trying new things more often. Smaller budget, less risk, more willingness to experiment. Whenever I hear "Triple A game" I just kinda groan, because you already know what it's going to be like.
So far CCP seems to be one of the few developers out there taking the risk. They poored in a lot of money into VR development and how they are reaping the rewards with Valkyrie, Gunjack, and now the upcoming SPARC which is the first non-Eve game that CCP might actually have a chance in releasing to the VR market. Ok, there is the Danger Games board game that it has but that's not a video game. XD

Overall, in the grand scheme of things, I see that a lot of FPS games out there are just bland. I am no longer intrigued by CoD or BF or Halo like I was use to. Dust and Overwatch were the only games that kept me going.
When Nova comes around for beta testing, you can count on me to jump on that like a hawk.

How many of the new bigger titles come as beta or a ******* pre alpha? Tons, literally. Why would they deliever a completed game when you can deliever an incomplete game, still in beta, with bugs, with cut out story to be sold in DLCs (oh... the DLCs) and people still buy it! Gladly to that!Well, it's disappointing. I went back to a lobby shooter I used to play before Dust (called A.V.A). Still having fun after what they did to it. Having some faith in CCP's project. Overwatch seems fun, Playerunknown's Battleground ( some fun with NL and bois) looks fun. But that'd be it I think.
Don't get me started on that DLC bullspit.
