Why did you shut down Dust 514 BEFORE you were ready to release Project Nova?
I tried a different FPS game, Planetside 2, but I'm rubbish at it and keep playing as a medic, plus it's poorly optimized (reminds me of Dust)
Dust 514 was the only game I was really good at... You've taken away my pleasure, and now I've turned to nekos to soothe the pain of Dust withdrawal. I dream about them...

My take is that they wanted to hedge their bets. There is the possibility that they will NOT release Nova or anything like it. If they were to undertake to keep the game going somehow, until the release of a game that may never release, that could become problematic for them. They would of course, eventually have to shut it down anyway, much as they already have.
One obvious deduction that could be made is that they NEVER intended to produce a replacement and therefore they shut down Dust, following the same logic as above. We know that there is some effort going into Nova, so presumably that is not the case, however there is still the possibility it won't launch. Shutting down Dust in the meantime is just a logical business move. |

The obvious answer is that it costs money to operate Dust and the servers for Dust. Despite many posters here thinking that Dust was somehow an awesome money maker, I think it was very likely that it did make some money at one time, but towards the end there, it simply wasn't profitable. So, Dust got the axe because it didn't pull its own weight.
That's pretty much the entire project in a nutshell. |
