I think putting Dust on the PS3 was an awful choice. It was nearing the end of it's life cycle, and the architecture of the CPU meant that it wasn't ever going to get off of that platform. Do you think Dust 514 would have lived longer, or maybe even be here today, if CCP hadn't scrapped the Carbon engine and developed on the PC instead? |

I think the kinks with the Carbon engine could've been worked out if they'd had more to work with, which they would've if they'd have stuck to PC. What was considered a reasonably priced rig got pretty good around that time, already a lot better than what you'd get from a PS3.
As for Nova, I don't really see it as a successor to Dust 514. It's going to be a completely different game, only sharing Dust's aesthetic and style. Completely different game, when I just want more Dust 514. Sucks that there aren't any FPSes like Dust 514 around anymore. |

The OP said that NOVA is going to be different than Dust 514. My argument is that all the extra things they are removing from Dust in order to make NOVA are superfluous to its ability to be a full fledged shooter that can compete with popular titles. The MMO-RPG aspect of the game can wait till later.

CARBON is just the Trinity Engine with some extra mods.

It was definitely a ticking time bomb of failure because of the poor development team when it started. The code was crap, hence the need for killing even Legion and starting fresh with Nova. Also, the original team wasn't well focused (no matter how laser like they claimed to be).
They spent way too much time on OBs while ignoring basic game play. They spent too much time devolping parts that could not be used until way down the line while ignoring balance.
At the same time, those mistakes may lead to better game development in the future.

They announced the game 10 months ago, then had a demo 2 months ago. And have confirmed they are still working hard on the game since, including a couple posts 3 months ago here and here.

CCP Rattati and his team had no choice but to kill off Dust 514 and start over COMPLETELY FROM SCATCH given how the previous executive producer for Dust 514 mismanaged the whole thing from the start. There was really no other option and many of us players saw this coming.

When I said "COMPLETELY FROM SCRATCH" I meant that the Legacy code is completely thrown away and replaced with an entirely brand new base code.
Old mechanics - Gone Legacy Bugs - Gone Unreal Engine 3 - Gone (now replaced by Unreal Engine 4)
The only things that are likely to remain are the old visual models, and (WARNING: WISHFUL THINKING INCOMING) our character data stored in the Tranquility servers.

I have no doubt at all that the data is there and available. My concern would be whether or not they make the new game compatible with that data.

I think it would have been better had it been put on the PC.
CCP was trying to capture some of the console market though, and that's why it was on the PS3.
As far as Carbon goes, choices regarding Dust development, dust platform choices, etc, well, CCP is their own worst enemy.

Dust514 was a descent game but, for it to be a contender against let's say Titanfall 2 or planetside, it needs to re-evaluate it's formula and the engine all together for all platforms.
