I've been biting my tongue reading this ridiculous argument. The only thing that matters is that EvE is being left to sit on the rust heap, while CCP milks whatever funds they can still get out of it to throw at any number of ill-advised attempts to break into the VR market, because someone at the top really really really thinks that's a great idea.
For this they are letting EvE sit somewhat idle - perhaps they think they don't really need to do anything more with EvE at the moment because it's already pretty diverse, but they'd be wrong - EvE denizens are ALWAYS complaining about the bugs. In fact most EvE denizens actually complain more about past "improvements" made by CCP and the bugs they introduced that still haven't been fixed, than they do about new content - they don't actually want new content, they just want the old stuff fixed.
And then there's Dust. Because of poor leadership (the same poor leadership that led to this obsession with VR) they let Dust die. It wasn't glitzy. They didn't design it right. They didn't integrate it into the EvE Universe properly, which would have required more work on EvE and they've left it to moulder so no. Hopefully, they WILL produce NOVA, but since it won't be VR, I don't know how much they'll bother with it.
VR will likely be the bridge too far for CCP. I'm sure in time VR will be really cool, but it's too early yet, and well, CCP already had EvE which is their bread and butter. I can't say I blame them for wanting to use profits from their tried-and-true product to venture into new territory, but to throw said product under the bus to do it is just silly.
Management at CCP needs to do a rethink, and possibly get rid of the one that is so determined to bury EvE, Dust and perhaps NOVA for the benefit of a few very expensive glitzy toys. |

If you take a look at the last article I've linked you'll see just how much CCP has forsaken Eve in an effort to diversify, which makes sense, but not to this degree and not to such the detriment of Eve. It'd be one thing if CCP actually made money off these side projects, but so far, every one of them has failed, or barely broken even (which is pretty much still a fail). I actually can't stop seeing it from the EvE subscriber's perspective (being one myself). You expect your subscription to go to the game you're subscribing to. Yet, in CCP's case, they term that "revenue" and just use it at will on anything they like. Come the day that someone does decide to axe EvE, the only thing the subscribers will see is that they've spent all this money to keep a game going and then they get a slap in the face for it. VR likely won't work for CCP. They should have focused their efforts PRIMARILY on EvE, and ventured tentatively into other areas with a small R&D budget, not bet the farm (and all the EvE subscriptions) on an unproven venture.
I for one feel quite jaded by the fact that CCP is using my EvE subscriptions to do this. If EvE does die at least it will be because CCP died through bad leadership. I no longer feel any warm fuzzies for CCP, particularly after the death of Dust. It will be only fitting if EvE dies too. I continue to hope that someone in upper management grows a pair and does something about the awful direction they're taking, and corrects this before it's too late. They've already "invested" (read thrown) huge amounts at these toys. That's not a good reason to keep doing it in the hope it will eventually get better.... |

This thread has been a train wreck that I just cannot turn away from. What is reasonable and what is ethical are two different things. Fair enough we don't have to play EvE, we don't have to throw our subscriptions at it, and as of recently we don't even have to subscribe to play, but if you do subscribe, you expect that the game you're subscribing to will benefit in some way. To know the subscriptions are just "revenue" and are used on anything CCP deems "reasonable" is not in keeping with the purpose of subscribing. |
