It seems that the Caldari State is the most preposterous of the four empires. This is because of the incompatibility between the economic system and their culture.
Their culture is supposedly the most austere of all the Empires, and yet their economy is the most consumer based one. How can it be that all is austere despite consumers being the driving force of the economy? In the Amarr Empire it could be stressed that religious laws prevent people from being too hedonistic. Yet, if anything the economic motivation of their government should enable a more hedonistic lifestyle for everyone. Yet it is the Gallente who have more restrictions that actually have a more hedonistic culture.
I see only two reasons this could be the case. One being that the Caldari are so resource deprived that austerity and efficiency in the design of products gives the consumers the best chance of surviving in their competitive culture. The other reason is that all the corporations propagate a sense of fear among the populous by propagating the myth that the Gallente will one day attack them, so it is necessary that they be at peak alertness at all times. This would be similar to how North Korea keeps it's citizens in line and how the U.S.S.R. used to keep everyone else in line.
The third reason is preposterous, and so I didn't consider it a plausible source for the disparity between their economy and culture. It is, of course, that the people are simply content to live simple lives where the only past times are sport, art and logical games like puzzles and betting.
The reason the third one is so preposterous is that multiple countries have tried that, mostly communist countries, and it has never worked. For some reason or another people don't like the idea of working to death for the sake of their country while getting nothing but more efficient tools in return. The only way to convince a populous to be austere is through force, through keeping raw resources low or by propagating the sense of an external threat to their way of life.
The last notion comes from WWII and proceeding wars where people often took up rationing in order to help the war effort. In the Cold War many communist countries also continued the threat of a Western attack for decades in order to keep everyone in line and to keep them for asking for more. Though these actions were for motives outside of profit.
Why then would the corporations willingly deny people more frivolous goods and services?
It is known that Gallente goods flood the Caldari underground and that the State medias had to be injected with more entertainment since many people realized that a large portion of Caldari citizens were watching Gallente news and watching Gallente movies, shows, documentaries and... porn0 (yes, there is actually a restriction on the word ).
So there is clearly a market, therfore why is it not being fulfilled? Is it the threat of war with the Gallente? Is it limited resources? Is it the corporations keeping everyone subservient to them to maintain their efficiency? Or is everyone simply just that happy to live life in a simple dull, grey-blue world?
Put your flags up in the sky.
And wave them side to side.
Show the world where you're from.
Show the world we are one.
