I'm starting to sweat a little at the fact that CCP is up against two very real time constraints: The end of the PS3 lifespan, and the pressure to start getting income from this long-delayed project.
I don't see the key components that indicate that the game is ready for open beta or stress testing. It is still missing:
- Territorial Control
- Dust Player Industry System
- Player Corporations
- EvE Universe integration
- Cov-Ops Cloak Modules for Vehicle/Dropsuit
- Capacitors on Vehicles (or dropsuits?)
- Capacitor Draining/Transfer Modules
- Electronic Warfare Modules
- Map Diversity
- Dynamic Objectives
I will admit that putting in remote repair modules, logistics suits, star map, and EvE market tie-in is a step towards their final goal, but they need to hold off on progressing to an open beta until these other missing things are addressed.
As things stand we are playing a very bland version of battlefield 2142 with very limited map selection and vastly large gaps in equipment quality on the same battlefield. Opening the game up to a larger audience at this point will put alot of people off because it is closer to an alpha build than a beta. CCP is mistaken that they can repeat the development process that EvE online went through. Console players will move on to a new game very quickly and there are alot of FPS multiplayer games to hold their attention already. In 2003, EvE was only one of a handful of MMO's, and the Sci-Fi nitch was still unfilled. These are not the conditions facing Dust 514.
I believe that it is critical to establish a fully functional game in order to get the initial market-share that CCP needs to make Dust 514 a long-term success. I anticipate most responses to this post will be that Dust 514 is free and that it is beta so of course its incomplete. All games are near final release state by the time things go into open beta, and the fact that CCP is charging for beta access indicates that they want to put Dust out there even if its not finished. |

I would also call that an open beta, but a better term would be a "hustle".
