While I agree about not spending money, "how games are supposed to be played" is subjective. A subscription helps to weed out the players who aren't committed to the game, and also helps to maintain an active update cycle since money is always flowing in.
They're two different approaches to gaming, it just depends on what you're looking to get out of the game.
CCP abandoned DUST in favor of VR and I'm just not ready to drop $400-$600 for CCP anytime soon. Once Nova is a reality we can talk about monetization.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 is a game you only have to pay once for and it gets free updates. It also has DLC though, another way for the company to make profit. There is a multiplayer mod too, but some drivers are so cancerous, moderators need to be online. That's true, though on the filp side, you get a game with the scope of simulating a truck driver. I don't think he meant to say the games are never updated, just that they rarely get meaningful content updates in a timely fashion, if at all. That's why so many games are adding in cash shop style things, even in single player games.

Especially when they knew well in advance the game wasn't going to actually persist

But c'mon CCP, bring Dust 514 to PS4 already. It's lucrative. I definitely would be up for buying Aurum and Merc packs again. Truth is, you got a large user base on PS4 that you can tap into. The truth is, I wouldn't get a PC to run NOVA and NOVA won't see the light of day for a while.
Bring Dust 514 back to PS4. Try it again. I know you're thinking about it. Don't let your dreams be dreams. Actually considering the focus on smaller maps, lower player counts and less assets on the field at once, I would bet you they want Nova to release on the PS4 at the same time as a PC launch, or shortly after.
There's no other reason to pull back the scope of the game so much other than to make it work with consoles too.
Then again, PS4 is nearing the end of it's cycle too, so who knows
