I've been watching some old Dust reviews today. Of course, they're all from the chromosome days and just blasted the game to pieces, if they reviewed it in Warlords the reviews would have been much different... probably.
Anyways, I have a question. Now that Dust is over and done with, what are your final thoughts? A complete retrospective.
For me: Not to be a fanboy or anything, but hands down the most fun I've had in a video game. Yes Dust had it's flaws, but the social aspect just doesn't exist in other games. The persistent world, the neo-com, the market, the customization, the dropships... I've practically quit gaming since Dust shut down because everything else feels so lifeless.
What are your guys' thoughts?

Steam reviews would have this game not even at 20% positive. Possibly one of the worst best games I have ever played(Vietcong: Purple Haze takes first), but the concept and the niche makes it to that title.

My thoughts on Dust?
Pros: + Umm...
Cons: - Lag - Drunk Scotty - Overpowered protostomping is normal
I'll say I enjoyed it for the most part, even though every time I got killed I raged like a potato... I still don't get why, it's not like I was using proto gear, like, ever.
Life can suck, but...

Dust514 : A Retrospective
When it was good it was up there with the best games I've played.
When it was bad it was truly soul destroyingly awful.
There never seemed to be an inbetween for me. I loved it, I hated it then I loved and hated it. Also at TooMany 'raged like a potato' describes most people I've heard on coms when they were getting killed.
Again I have to agree that no other game quite meets the grade and I have struggled to find one that gives the same experience. I get the feeling that Dust just attracted slightly mad people.
Welcome to Dust. The bitter, salty taste is a feature just like the lag.

I've always loved this game and I still do. Yeah, there was lag, Scotty was drunk every now and then, rob pilots where high or something, etc, but most of the time (atleast for me) the game was good, it was smooth, I liked the visuals etc.

My main issue was that the game's "balance" catered to the majority, and not how things actually are.
In example (not saying this happened, because it didn't): if the majority of the community decided to run around hip-firing sniper rifles, and told CCP that's how they think sniper rifles are used, then sniper rifles would be adjusted so that hip-firing them is not only viable, but effective.
Assaults and assault rifle variants were always OP because they had the highest percentage of idiots using them, which made them statistically look weaker than they really were.
My main point is that next time around, CCP needs to stop looking at overall statistics, and find a better way to balance instead, like watching how the top percentages of players perform with certain equipment.

The meta game, THE META GAME.
The wars, back stabbing, alliances and boats. Dust was great because of the meta game.

Game stank. Played it a lot. Draw what you will from that.
KDR matchmaking would have fixed everything, but nooooo.

i had alot of cheap and effective work arounds during the various nerfs buffs.
like the 512.5 hps rep maddy before its nerf. that sure was a great time.
i dont think i ever used a proto suit in the game. or a proto weapon of any type.
i did use proto plates and sep modules though. other than that it was all mlt. or adv in the later days.
and 3 proto code breakers on a gal heavy suit. fun times.
although i disliked they way the nerfs and buffs kept going around.
i feel like i was the only one who was asking to bump up mlt gear. in order to make it more on par with the higher leveled equipment.
great potential is always there..
it just has yet to be realized
1st one in. and also.. The Last One Out....

The game was a game of extremes.
At its best, it was as fun or more fun than any other game.
At its worst, it was frustrating and awful.
It was good enough to keep coming back intermittently, and bad enough that I would go whole patches and updates without playing.
It was a game that could have been groundbreaking if it weren't held back from its own brokenness.

I played this game like it was my job. The days of getting up 3 hours early for work for a corp battle. I played it far too much considering it was the same handful of maps and when you ended up on the wrong end of a proto stomp it was hell.
I miss it a lot. I have never been able to replicate the joys of scouting in any other FPS. I had hopes for PS2 but while the Infiltrator suit is fun, it's just nowhere near as awesome as my Min and Gal scout suits.
I miss my scout brethren. I made friends on this game that I still play with in other games. I've never done that before or since.
Hope to see you all again some day! |

Lol, I could.
Dust caused me to be late for work a few times, and pissed my GF off more than once.
