I'm pretty sure i'm not going to find any people disagreeing with me on this here, but gaming, just like volleyball and golf, are sports.
Anything that requires dedication and sharp senses to be competitive at, i would say are a sport.
Racing, beer drinking, arm wrestling, farting, breath holding, throwing of paper airplanes, i would say all of them can be turned into a sport(if not already)

Anything that is a competition and conducted in an organized manner could be considered a "sport". Now I wouldn't put something like gaming in the category of sports as say baseball since one is more physical that the other, but both are sports nonetheless.

eSports would be my ideal profession.
The British eSports Association was formed just under 3 months ago. I wish I could get into it, but they're probably not going to do much beyond CoD and League.

. A sport requires actual physical exertions of the body . which is by definition . so it depends on your own personal definition of sport . I personally don't consider "gaming" a sport , cause I jog/run 8miles a day , 100 push ups a day etc and that's my definition of exertion . I see gaming as the ultimate "Mental Competition" but at the same time its my "chill , relax & pew pew" therapy . eSports though , is the future . .

@Lynn Beck: You are quite correct in that farting can be a sport :D
@TooMany Names AlreadyTaken: reference ^
@deadpool lifetone: "...sport requires actual physical exertions of the ..." farting doesn't always requiring exertion, but it is required to be competitive in said sport.
Farting is most likely the only sport that is universally available to every single person on this planet. And noone actually has to train to partake in it. In fact, many of the "lower" lifeforms partake in that "sport", although probably not as a competition. Farting is the single most versatile sport known to humans. There are so many ways to compete.
Examples:
Distance - furthest movement with continuous output, furthest reaching fumes are just 2 of the distance factors. Timing - a properly timed fart can be dastardly, obnoxious, annoying, or just simply fun. Aroma - can span from mildly noticeable to downright gut-wrenching.
And, as with any sport, caution is always advised - there are many ways of hurting oneself, as well as others, in said effort. And it has the potential to be quite...messy if done improperly.
I could go on and on with this here topic here, but I think y'all are getting the idea.
For the record: I personally hold the local group (distance with continous output) award for approximately 30 foot record while climbing stairs :) , made more satisfying in that another competitor was actually behind me during the entire event.
Just saying

When you move from doing something for fun to doing that something professionally, the fun often fades away. I enjoy video games and play them with the intention to win and have fun but really have no intentions beyond that. As for watching eSports, if I wanted to watch a sport, I would have probably gotten into watching football. I will always enjoy actually playing over watching others play.
BTW, since we are discussing competitive gaming, I also believe if you have bought a modded controller, used exploits, etc, you have to at least somewhat admit to yourself you suck at whatever game you are attempting to play to use such things. I don't use such things simply as I think they defeat the point in playing the game. Then again, I am from a different generation. Yes, I am old, but I am still playing.

I think the kinds of people who go into eSports are different from you too; they also play to win like the modded controller users, but unlike them they play to win legitimately. 'Fun' as you understand it doesn't factor in as much.
Consider a guy who plays football at the weekend as a hobby, and someone who plays it professionally. Which one do you think has more fun?

What's the point in simply winning if not having fun? I mean are some people such losers in their general life they have to resort to such means to simply win a game that really doesn't mean anything anyway? (Sorry if that question sounded rhetorical.) I mean if so, they should play games like CoD and Destiny on console where everyone is awesome due to the autoaim being so high all you have to do is aim in the general vicinity of a target to get a kill. Then again, that would explain those games' high sales.

Source: I was one such loser who cared more about winning than fun. Didn't use a modded controller though.

Then again, that would explain those games' high sales. I would argue that it's probably more satisfying to win in games like DUST specifically because of that very reason, that you become very distinguished by winning a lot. Whereas in those other games like CoD it's not as impressive or satisfying because as you said, everyone can be awesome.

Just saying Is this a good time to mention that my dog is scared of her own farts? She does not understand what is causing the noise right behind her and ends up trying to run away from her own ass.
