So what is this rumor I am seeing about NOVA not having the big battles like Dust did?
We have no one to blame for the poor state of the game except ourselves(and Rattati for listening)

The overall direction can change depending on what the community wants and what CCP can deliver.

32 players would be kind of disappointing considering what PCs should be able to handle, and what kinds of player counts most other online FPS's have.

I would rather them start out with 32 player battles that are fun, and make people want to play the game, then try to expand it to 60 people, and spend so much time trying to make that work that the game is boring or frustrating.

While I do enjoy the large scale battles, it reaches a point where more players doesn't equate to more interesting gameplay.
MAG I think holds the record for most players in one battle at a time (256) but the map was divided into 4 quadrants that you typically never left, so in reality it was a 32 vs 32 battle. I mean sure you could cram more than 64 players into one area but then player density reaches a point where tactical movement and planning starts to mean less and less because it's too much of a clusterfuck to matter.
So the point is, large battles are cool but only to a point. After that point, its ends up being longer queue times to fill the slots without much gain.

I would quite like it if they could have both a large player count in matches and a fun game. I don't believe that it's a choice between one or the other. I'm sure the programmers and designers they have are capable, and can accommodate both. If they choose to, that it.
I don't know about MAG but I never played it, but I know from playing other games with a large player count in matches that I like the feeling of being in a large battle. Even if you don't see the entire battle, you still feel its impacts. It still drains your tickets. Somewhere, something someone's done is making your MCC's shield tick down a little bit faster. I like knowing that I'm in something big. I agree that the solution isn't to cram more people into a smaller space, but I believe CCP has people more competent than that, who can think of more complex means of making larger battles, where it feels like everything is joined up and you are part of something bigger than merely what you can see.
Basically what I want is that dream that we all had at one point, of having these huge maps where you needed vehicles to travel to the battles. Maybe what I want already exists in the form of Planetside 2. I guess the announcement that CCP is not planning for vehicles already shows what direction they intend to take the game. I understand that they want to focus on the core gameplay element, but I hope they don't neglect giving the game the New Eden sparkle. Don't let it be just a good, albeit generic sci-fi shooter.
Also, why are we not quoting each other?

You can have both a fun game and lots of players, provided you have enough resources.
Nova does not have the resources at this point.
If they are ever going to get to a point they have both fun core gameplay, and large battles, they will first need to focus on the the fun core game play. That will result in greater resources which can then be used to build the game into something more.
It is a matter of practical, real world logistics, and not merely wishes.

I am conscious though of how late in the development cycle they can turn around and say 'Right! Now that that's all sorted out, let's up the scale and player count! Let's throw in transport and vehicles and large-scale features!'
I just urge CCP to consider what sort of improvements they might like to make after the core mechanics are finalised. I worry that tossing a spanner in the works could upset the finely tuned balance CCP sought to achieve, and that by the time they want to put more features in, it will be too late in the development cycle.
All this abstinence from quoting is making me anxious. It reminds me of Arkena. /shudder

It is a matter of practical, real world logistics, and not merely wishes. We don't know what Nova has or doesn't have, or if it even still exists at this point.
All I'm saying is that once they bring in the big maps, they better add more players to the field. If we are able to place 4 capture points, but only enough players to occupy 2 or 3, then add more.
As for Pokey, I'm not even sure why you would suggest queue times for a 60p match. Large scale matches should be ongoing lobbies/battles. As soon as one battle ends, you get transferred to the next one without having to go back to quarters, or whatever, and start another large scale battle. Resistance 2 did this and it was extremely effective. Not only would it be more fun, but it would also bring out a "EvE at constant war" vibe as well.

Also, why are we not quoting each other? First off, sorry for the months late follow up. Now to the meat of the conversation. PS2 was great but it was missing something. It was missing that risk-reward system that Dust tried to implement. I say 'try' due to the fact that CCP couldn't get us to destroy ISK faster than we were earning it. At least those of us that are still here on the forums. The big battles I love, and the ability to pack up and move away from a losing situation is nice as well. Maybe a CCP implemented version would be big battle FW going nonstop across the systems. All of this is guesswork and I haven't looked at the forums before writing this response.

I support adding larger battles later as an expansion once the game is working well, and confining them to a separate match type. Then if there are people who's computers or connection speed can't handle the larger matches, then they can just avoid queuing for that match type.
