https://www.massdrop.com/vote/AMD-RX-480-VR-READY
Even if you are not going to buy right away cast your vote for "AMD's Radeon RX480 is the cheapest VR-capable graphics " the one on the far left to help get them to allow preorders for those of us that don't feel like dealing with supply chain crap out.

I don't understand why people try to make high-end PCs with AMDs just to save a bit of money then can't handle the heat it produces.
Why get to save money when you're going to try for high-end?

Nothing about an rx480 is high end. It's a $200 graphics card that's supposedly vr capable. So right now it's probably one of the best bang for your buck cards you can get for an entry/beginner level build.
I'm an nvidia fan, I own a gtx 980 ti. But even if they do run a little hotter AMD cards aren't that bad. And I especially wouldn't care about heat on a lower end build. If you build a decent computer with decent air flow and you aren't trying to exceed the cards limits then it should be totally fine

Heat is everything.
You may have a lower entry fee, but you pay for that with heat-related upkeep. So you have to buy a new card sooner. If you really wanted to save... you'd splurge a bit for the higher end cards, that have lower heat output. Cooler running computers stay at peak performance far longer than hot computers.

You Nvidia Fan boys are too funny.
You scream about high end when no one said anything about aiming for high end. I only care about 4k @ a stable 60Hz frame rate. Most people would agree that the number one thing that matters is what you get out of what you put in.
You scream about heat on a card that very very few have even lay hands on to test. The TDP of the RX 480 is roughly 30% lower than that of the GTX 1080. For all you rocket scientists that can only scream toaster here's how TDP works.
2 rx 480s in crossfire are matching the gtx 1080 for half the price meaning even IF you some how manage to burn them out in 3 years and have to replace them then you are still operating at a positive by comparison.

People need to get educated here. AMD and Nvidia are pretty equal now in perf and power efficiency. Most of you guys must think about AMD CPUs which aren't great, but there's a world between the quality of their GPU &CPU (until Zen?)

I had not thought about it but you are correct.
I love my AMD processor and it gets the job done but I would be a fool to say that the fan does not run more and it definitely adds to the heat.

Why do you guys are complaining about CPU/GPU heat? Really, that's something meaningless to worry about

Bulldozer architecture was major failure because 80% PC users are using Windows and Windows held that CPU back.

Err... 60 FPS is okay if you can handle that rate. Studies on VR have shown that you need rates of about 120 or higher in order to avoid getting sick from the flash delay. While you won't be able to visibly tell there is flashing at 60 FPS, the back of your brain can. It usually results in a sick reaction, as the body thinks it may be poisoned.
Again note: The 120 is suggested, some people can handle 60 FPS just fine.

Well, Mr. Moneybags, not everyone can replace their cards/chips at the drop of a hat when they start to age. And subpar performance, even by a bit will cause VR Sickness.
When you use VR, the system WILL be running HOT. This is not a question, it is a statement, as the card needs to do 2 perspective renders at the same time.
If you have a system that won't run hot... then clearly you don't have need of this budgetary conversation.

VR has basically been set at 2560 x 1440 @ 90 hz by Oculus and HTC. 60 frames per second on a screen that is not glued to your face is basically perfect.
If you can run 4k @ 60 hz then you can VERY easily push a VR helmet. A single RX480 is built specifically to work well with the Rift and the Thrive at a lower price point. Besides I really do not care about VR right now as Oculus' lack of ability to deliver has really just made me not care.

What heat related upkeep though? Like I said, unless your pushing your cards past the limit, as long as your system has decent cooling, the reduced lifespan should be minimal. Especially today with newer models that really don't heat near as much.

I also wonder what this mysterious heat related upkeep is. You are going to have to clean out dust no matter what you have.
If you are not over clocking then this so called damage is basically going to be nonexistent thanks to clock rates being set well under safe thresholds.

I've had AMD in the past and haven't had any issues, but the simple fact is Nvidia acts as its own capture card so until AMD does that I don't give two biscuits about their stuff :/

Complaining about heat buildup in AMD GPUs? Seems I've mysteriously been transported back to the mid/late 00s.
I'll freely admit that I'm a bit of an AMD fanboy. Honestly, though, these days there isn't really a huge difference in whether you pick an AMD GPU over an Nvidia one or vice versa. The only real objective performance difference is which AAA titles you'll have a small to moderate framerate advantage on.
Subjectively, it's a matter of business practices. Nvidia tends to have a mindset similar to Apple, they are very protective of their IP and technological advancements and have established a premium brand that they attach an additional premium price to. AMD has adopted a more open market stance, they are generally more cost effective to consumers, but they forego the premium driver support and branding (ie G-sync) you see with Nvidia.
Heat is the last thing you need to worry about when comparing modern GPUs. They've gotten efficient enough power consumption and heat dissipation that it's a non-issue. Hell, I'd be surprised if the 1080, 1070, or 480 would even hit anything above 75C outside of stress tests, and that leaves a good 10 degrees before I'd even start to get concerned. If you hear anyone joking about it on forums these days, it's because the "joke" is that it's an outdated meme without any actual meaning left. It is basically a sarcastic "non-burn" to the opposing team that works either way, because it doesn't actually mean anything. |
