I was aiming at people from maybe 20 meters away and couldn't tell if they were friendly or enemy.
I saw 2 tanks rolling down the road towards me - not a clue whether to fire or not.
This seriously needs to be fixed asap its gone from one extreme to the other. |

They overdid the spotting distance reduction. If you are looking at them and there is no indicator, it is 80% of the time going to be a friendly, since those appear at a closer distance than enemies. Not foolproof, but good enough to make reasonable snap decisions. |

I have just been shooting 1 bullet off at them - if it goes red = enemy |

Not so. I spent several minutes laying into a friendly with a missile turret earlier today because he had no indicator above his head and I got a red damage indicator every shot. Also of note, I was seeing red indicators down the road floating around with no player model under them, but I could kill them by shooting at them since there was no cover in that spot and I knew they weren't behind anything. EDIT: For clarity, this was within 20 seconds of each other, same match, same session in turret.
Seems kinda random when it decides to show or not. |

YES! I was actually about to make a topic about this, good thing I searched . This is happening to me too, whenever anything is about 30-40 meters away, I can't tell if its friendly or enemy whether thats infantry or vehicles. I think this was part of the patch notes that they did that to make the screen less cluttered with names all over the place. But it needs adjustment, maybe have a blue/green arrow over all friendlies at any distance, and as you get closer, the shield/Armor bars start showing up. |

It would make sense to have unlimited spotting distance with friendlies, since you should be sharing sensor data anyway.
Might even make sense to have all sensor data shared with team, though spotting distance might have to be nerfed a bit more to balance that. Heck, there could also be deployable and/or cappable sensors that add to the net, not unlike how things worked in tribes 2. Would definitely fit in with dust's emphasis on tactical combat. |

Its not random
The players you can see from far away have been spotted by a friendly that is closer to them. If you couldn't see the player models that is a graphical thing they would need to fix - but I haven't had any issues with seeing people - I can usually see people's player models from quite far away in DUST.
I agree that originally you could spot an enemy from the other side of the map which was silly but I think u should still be able to mark them from a fair distance. We are in super high tech suits after all. |

This bugs me too, the only solution i have is to mouse over a target and If your crosshair turns red...blow it up. |

I can think of several ways to reduce clutter and still have the IFF marker show up.
1. When you zoom in on a target and it is in your targeting reticule have the indicator come up no matter what the range 2. Have a button to mark the target when you are facing it and it is in the targeting reticule -- zoomed in or not. (Battlefield)
I like @Ahnaran' s idea of shared spotting but only if combined with something like I've suggested above. @Threvis Valan is right. Friendly fire will be a nightmare if this isn't addressed.
I'd also like to put in another bid for a colored glow indicating IFF around players that are to close to see the chevron over their heads. In CQC not being able to tell who the bad guys are is a killer. I guess it could be a deliberate "fog of war" kind if thing but I'm not in favor of it if it is. |

Reduced spotting distance is one thing, but the "tac net" ought to be able to identify friendlies at all times regardless of distance.
Another issue is the sniper distance. Snipers should never get within 20 m of their target if they can avoid it. |

That was probably me.... I was in a dropship on the tower and I had someone shooting me with a missile launcher for about 5 minutes. Maybe it wasn't. Still, Your crosshairs will change red if its an enemy. |

Since my earlier post I looked into it a little more.
There is a skill that modifies the "signature" of a dropsuit. More skill, the harder the dropsuit is to detect. Later skills / modules may add things that detect / mask if a dropsuit can be targeted / marked-with-a-chevron.
So, if we are having trouble telling friend from foe the best idea might be to always mark friends no matter what the distance. If a character / vehicle isn't marked and you see it then it's an enemy. You still might not be able to lock it up or get it to highlight but you can feel free to shoot at it.
And in this setup a friendly too close to you to see his "chevron" would glow blue or green. An enemy might not have a glow at all - they could be masked.
This setup would allow CCP to do whatever it wants with targeting and marking but not create a rampage of friendly fire. |

NECROMANCY!
You should always be able to see the symbol for a teammate, teammates are integrated in the same tacnet system, and share spotting data. It just makes sense that you should be able to spot a friendly regardless of distance. I have gotten into long range gun fights with teammates and shot at friendly HAVs because of this. |
