....It pains me to see this game end THIS WAY.
It was a struggle to get players to learn by just raw trial-n-error and slow-intuition, how "Dust is intended to be played a certain way in order to regularly win matches".
Most of us never seemed to understand, (or just never accepted what was told to them by other players---or maybe just never honestly agreed with the principles), that Dust is so tightly locked into checks-v-counters, spend-versus-lose, use my top gun-versus-fear of getting killed and blowing my wallet... It was so hard to get most players to realize how so importantly those principles were operating behind the curtain while they were running and shooting. SO importantly...that if CCP put a whole lot of free SP and gear on the table like we're asking, it would take away those locks and leave us with a game so "OP" the matches can't really be played anymore.
Just announcing that the game will stop in "X" months took away a psychological lock that helped keep the matches reasonably playable. Dust is a weird game that really can't be played WELL without a real fear of losing ISK or progress. And now, both forms of fear are gone. Some of us think it's "Fun" for everyone to shoot a proto-something non-stop until we all can't even turn our merc head before we're dead. It's only like trying to play golf in 60 mph winds----you just feel stupid trying to keep playing it.
I don't know what the increase in player numbers means... that old vets have returned to try the game? That naysayers who never liked the game have descended to plague the players who stayed, and poison the only remaining game days you Dusters have? Or that the game is being flooded by a lot of novices who are eager to experience some piece of this game that raised so much conversation, but who genuinely don't know what to do or how to use stuff...
It only took less than 5 weeks for the gameplay to decay back down into locusts running and jumping every which way, running passed vital hack-points, standing with their backs to red CRUs 15 feet away, planting equipment they don't halfway understand the limitations of, in places that cause truckloads of their own team's deaths from falling backwards off ledges and tumbling into redzone, or being disoriented and stuck in crevasses where the enemy players see you and just pee on your head.
... I would rather tell the devs to pull the plug on this game TOMORROW, than to watch it go on like this (and get worse) over the next 3 weeks. I can always climb into a DS and just leave this wreckage safely below me if I get too frustrated... But for those of you on the ground who used to enjoy flanking, buddy-defense, tactical breaching, and problem-solving to win matches,... all of that seems gone now, and moving around on the ground is like trying to escape a feasting mob from the Walking Dead. Walking Dead who are carrying guns.
Wow. A player community once SAVED this game... and it's a player population now in the end, who prematurely killed it... ...I didn't expect this sort of requiem.

It was sort of always like this minus the froggers, but now everything's broken down completely so it's much easier to see.
It started out broken and it'll die even worse. Just hope the Devs will learn from it but don't give your hopes up. Plus PS3 is an old system so it had to end sometime.

Not sure I quite follow. Are you saying the matchmaking is bust? I guess this may be due to dwindling player count. It's a shame. Most veterans are trying to blow through their remaining isk. It's best if they can fight each other. |

Yup proto stomping everywhere. But it's fun AF when you have a competent squad with you. Solo play if borderline suicidal at this point. If you needs a squad member I play every afternoon and will continue to do so till shutdown then I'm moving on to EvE till Nova gets released.

Scotty's Matchmaking system was always hush-hush, and I will never condemn it. I never believed any electronic software application could "match up" players against each other in the WAY we players in our minds THINK or WANT a human opponent to be matched up against an "equal" opponent.
Whatever each of us thinks matchmaking involves, I don't think Scotty was set up (or any "Scotty" can be set up) to successfully accomplish that with human players.
It's the breakdown in player-motives that have gone all wacky.
Five months ago I could pick an uplink from the map to regenerate from, and expect not to find some way to walk to the objective from there. In any Dom or Acqui match I choose is likely to spawn me in the middle of the main HAV roads, or trapped between some girders below a Null panel. or about to fall 30 feet down, over a biomass pit.
Snipers have returned to the matches by the truckloads. I've survived through several matches where you could see on the overhead map 7 players entrenched around the edges of the map, sporadic players so spread out and far from the center of town that the red team couldn't even FIND a victim to Redline (...that's one benefit, anyway), and only one blue player at a time actually trying to hack the target (which of course can't be done on your own).
Players seem only equipped with a repper or a locus grenade. When a red vehicle appears, it can dominate a match for whole minutes without any advanced-level equipment being used against it.
It's as though everyone either has abandoned gear, and just fits the largest proto-GUN their suit can handle...
OR, those players SP-trained enough to use the advanced gear are gone,... and the population playing in these last few weeks are too weakly-trained and too unfamiliar with the game to do anything but shoot a bit and run blindly into walls of fire from the other team.
It's not the brutality-n-survival of the old Dust matches, but not any desire to relate to any activity you see going on around you either (whether it's a blue player doing it or a red player).
Public Skirmishes were always somewhat like this, yes that's true.
But now all match types seem to play out like either "Full Retreat everybody!" or, yes, "every man for himself".
....We've undone our own game. I just didn't see this coming.

Though they're disbanded now, those who remain still have fun and still win matches (sometimes solely with one squad's efforts...Yaay!).
But even they have said the matches are just too much about headhunting for as many kills as they can...
...walking right passed assets that are easy to hack and win.
... treating every match type like just an Ambush-match.
The effect is just hillbilly chaos. I've even had a lone red player run after our Dropship (yes, I said RUN on foot) emptying clips of SMG rounds on the vehicle. Not using a viable weapon. Not running away because he/she was all alone and could easily be squashed. Just... a zombie trying to chew on the car in a scene from the Walking Dead.
It's just psychologically-impaired player behavior. Every player with tunnel-vision, and every match mode now an Ambush-match.
Our game ending not with a Bang, but with a Whimper.

I can only agree with everything you said, except for the fact that I haven't experienced much of the way the game used to be. I only really played for less than a year so I'm only now getting my skills up to a level where I could have been reasonably proficient, but since I play solo, I don't have a chance against the squadders and qsyncers who always seem to inhabit the other team. Plus the call to "Burn all your officer, pro and isk" seems to have turned everyone into mindless killers who often just rush at you shooting whatever they are brandishing, without any thought for the expense.
I, on the other hand, have only just reached the level where I can use precious (to me) officer gear and I know I'll just lose the lot in days if I were to try to use it, with all this mindless killing going on. To me, that's the sort of mentality that really does ruin the game, and people who think it's great have such alien thinking that I just can't bring myself to try to fight them. The nature of a game where everyone is just running around mindlessly killing everything in sight actually is quite sickening. I find myself leaving more and more battles because of my gut reaction to this sort of thing, when I fully expected to be playing more and more, at the level I've only really just reached.
I think it's really sad. |

Most veterans are trying to blow through their remaining isk. It's best if they can fight each other. Yes, it's precisely because "Most veterans are trying to blow through their remaining isk." that this is occurring. Rather than sane, reasonable, ENJOYABLE gameplay, we non-vets have to deal with the vets just killing everything in sight. Yes, it would be best if they can fight each other, but ultimately, they end up fighting people like me, solos, noobs, just wiping the floor with them.
Squadding and qsyncing mean that the vets are often on the one team and the other team is filled with people like me. I only solo, DON'T and WON'T squad because of the mentality which seems now to pervade the game, with squadders and qsyncers now just roving gangs that seem to take extreme pleasure from killing everyone, destroying the game for anyone else. |

The problem with this is that there are some, like me, who WILL NOT squad, directly because squadding means participating in this killfest, which I find detestable. It's not a matter of "gitting gud", I simply find the whole thing objectionable, and it's taking over the game. I'm finding myself playing less and less as a result, when I had hoped to be playing right up to the end. |

I might just go back to sniping. I started off in this game as a sniper, as that was all I knew from previous games I've played. It was always my favourite role, but sucked in this game.
Now, though, with the last few weeks of the game upon us and the whole point of the game lost to all this ridiculous gameplay, it might be worth revisiting sniping and seeing if there's anything I might have learnt in the meantime.... |

I look at it this way. It could have been far, far worse.
The legacy of Dust, and I'm not talking about its code, could have died right there on the PS3 and left abandoned with no successor to carry on its legacy to another platform. Imagine getting the announcement that Dust will shut down on May 30 but then CCP says there are no more plans for any such games in the future and that all Dust player data will be wiped out from the database with the Eve Online: Citadel expansion.
Imagine that kind of ending. Now that would truly be a terrible way to end the game. No Project Nova and definitely no tiered rewards for loyal Dust players. Just a quiet whimper in the distance as the coffin of a legacy is finally buried.
...
:(
Thankfully, it's not ending like that. Project Nova has been announced and it's on the PC with a much better engine with a strong focus on eliminating the very thing that killed Dust from the beginning. Ok, now I'm talking about the OTHER legacy that we hate. Legacy Code.
