Spectator mode will be awesome but leave streaming out, that time can definitely be far better served on other aspects of the game.
Most Twitch broadcasters use OBS exclusively while a few have stepped up to more high end software.
If you don't believe me go talk to a random sampling of Twitch streamers and ask them what they use and why. OBS takes the cake thanks to its plugin support, stream quality adjustment, mixing ability, being free, and many other aspects. In game streaming simply can not and will not meet the current requirements that it takes to have a decent stream.
Besides that windows 10 even also has game capture built in as well. |

Nope Rattati has directly referenced spectator mode and in game streaming when asked about the possibility of Nova being an e-sport.

Pokey Dravon wrote:Are you concerned about development time being spent on adding an ability to stream? I almost wonder if Unreal 4 has that built in as a feature...
Wasted development time and the possibilities of bugs that can increase system resource usage.
It seems like a small thing but for something that it seems most of us agree would be a total waste of time and resources its worth bringing up. |

Draxus Prime wrote:You do realize UE4 has spectator built in? Also why do you think the guy who works on this and other e sports stuff will affect development time? "You were doing YOUR job but x didn't get done, you could've been doing x even though it has nothing to do with you"
Based on the information we have seen Shanghai does not have a huge staff by any means of either developers or quality testers making it a situation where the time can simply be better spent elsewhere.
Spectator mode I am all for because it will be a nice addition and you are correct that the core components already exist in UE4.
It is only the adding of direct support of Twitch, Youtube, or any other live streaming services that I am saying don't bother with because it is simply a waste of time and resources.
Go look on Twitch at any live streamers, you will find that almost every single one of them is using OBS because it supports audio mixing to interact with the viewers, "hold" screens for when doing something you don't want people to see, it does not crash when the game crashes leaving your viewers all scattering to somewhere else, and the list just goes on and on. No level of coding on CCPs part is going to make them catch up to a program that is dedicated to streaming with likely a couple million users and has the support of thousands of people world wide making plugins for it so why not focus that energy on bettering some other aspect of the game.
What it really comes down to is Rattati and team aren't sitting around studying how people that stream go about doing things so I am just trying to give some input based on what has been said in interviews and be helpful. In game streaming is proven to be something that no one uses and that's all I am trying to communicate. I am not trying to tell CCP how to prioritize parts of their project or anything else. |
