I realize things like early gear unlocks and progression accelerators are fairly common in the free-to-play market, but games like Path of Exile have also proved that you can make more than sufficient income solely from cosmetics and your community will love you for it as well.
You could even do tiers of cosmetics like EVE Online has, where some are quite cheap and others are very expensive but fancier looking, so people who want to go maximum Special Snowflake will make the jump in order to be more unique compared to other players.
An issue I've frequently seen discussed in free-to-play games is that the player feels like they're slogging through an uphill grind to unlock anything unless they're using every possible progression booster. I think it will be far easier to craft a balanced progression experience and not have anyone put off by feeling like they have to pay to be competitive.

If i cant spend hundreds on SP boosters then i'll be sad
I guess the true fun of Dust 514 was triple-stacking both booster types, right?

abdullah muzaffar wrote:+1 for cosmetics only. CS:GO/Dota 2 have perfect monetization. You never feel that the game is P2W. Part of why I've suggested this on multiple occasions is for exactly that reason. There's no amount of Press events or DevBlogs you can throw around to say your game isn't pay-to-win that will change the opinion of someone who plays it and feels like it's pay-to-win.
You'll lose that potential customer almost immediately in many cases.

Bright Cloud wrote:Are you mental? Everybody knows that the big cash is made with guns and other stuff that give you a advantage over the regular pleb. Precisely.
However, that's not a very sustainable model. You want people to spend and KEEP spending, not drive out everyone without money because they can't compete, thus meaning the "CASH FOR WIN BUTTON" people can only fight each other and get pissed that their money isn't enough, and then leave the game as well.
That gives you a free-to-play game that only lasts a few months at most.

But the truth is that until this games switches from Project to a named Product that CCP commits to launching by a certain date, speculating about something so far along the design process like micro-transactions while interesting, isn't likely to be helpful to the Dev's.
It should also be noted that over the week I've been in Iceland talking to Frame, Rattati and others, micro transactions and making money from Nova hasn't been mentioned once. It's very, very low on the list of priorities right now.
Yeah, just musing. I wasn't expecting them to be planning that already.
