I just met this guy Bill outside of Sport Check. He's in his 60's, divorced, his children want nothing to do with him, he's got cancer, and he's in financial trouble. All I had was a $10 dollar tim's card (tim hortons) to give him a dinner and maybe breakfast so I gave that to him and told him I'd pray for him. I wish I had done more on the spot for him but it seems my act did a lot for him because of my age. I was with my mother and she said she had no money but I remembered I had the tim's card and got it out. Anyway, this man needs your prayers. For healing, reconciliation, and quality of life. He said he's ok with going but I want do do everything possible to save him. Please pray and share this with others.
Thanks and God bless!
James 5:13-20 "13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.[b] 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit. 19 My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, 20 let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins."
Mark 16:17-18 " 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.GÇ¥

Really, what does praying do. Honestly. It's not by prayer that the boy there is cured of cancer, but by the doctors will and medical treatment. It's not by prayer that the poor man has gained a second chance, but by the fact that he got up and made a move. Anyone can pray, but does it really do anything?

It's entirely psychological propaganda. When prayers coincide with a positive event, it's "causation" or "proof". But when it doesn't, well let's just not talk about it. That would make people start being realists, ya know?

but that does not mean it isn't something one should do.
should you give ten bucks to a homeless addict to get food, knowing full well he if going to go get what ever caused him to be homeless in the first place?
yes, but there are better ways to go about it, get him a meal, take him to a shelter, give him clothes to keep warm.
it goes the same for prayer, one can sit and talk to god (or whatever they believe in, because lord knows what people believe in these days.... there are some weird ass religions out there....), or they can do as what is actually taught in the bible, and pray, not by talking alone, but by helping, and protecting others.
by going out and making a difference.
yes there is the prayer of talking to god, but that is contemplative, to learn from an experience that you had.
true prayer, good prayer, involves action, not just contemplation.

You'd think people would keep their sarcasm and harsh comments out of a thread like this but then again these forums aren't too classy. This is kinda short selling the accomplishments of humans (people who actively trying to help somebody and do what they can) and also leads to thinking like "Oh. I don't need to vaccinate my child or go to the doctor. Praying is enough!" Please be a bit more rational.
If you want to believe please, but don't sell others short. Too often it happens that a doctor or somebody can save someone and the people just say "Thank god for he heard my prayers!" Yeah... thanks a lot.

That being said, boy are some people in this thread super bitter. Making comments and assumptions based on stuff they think they know about religion, but are mainly self created projections of hate.
Anyways, talking about religion on the Internet. What could go wrong?

Let us pray:
Oh lordy, whatever form or thing you are, even if you are nothing and we are speaking to ourselves, please help this man's suffering to end in your own chosen way. Maybe to you that means he will win the lottery, or maybe he will be doing push ups one morning and Earth tremors will cause a knife to rattle off of a table and acrobatically tumble across the floor landing exactly perpendicular to his abdomen on his downward exercise motion, causing him to accidentally impale himself, thereby piercing his aorta and spilling his life essence onto the ground, oh lord. Even if he must pass through five minutes of agonizing pain and suffering, wondering if he lived his life in the best way, trying to hang on until the ambulance arrives only one second too late, please end his suffering.
Thus we pray.
Amen. |

Praying is self psychology. Don't let the modern profession of Psychology as a science(?) cloud your judgement. When you are face down in a ditch, proverbial or real, you don't get to have a shrink standing over you. This is why some pastors nowadays like to call it by another name GÇô meditation GÇô that will better appeal to those who would belittle a process merely because of semantics.
It does what it is supposed to do, keeps you going in a positive way as well as passes on that notion to others. It is theough positive attitude that we remember to help others, not rotten dismissiveness.
So yeah, between the OP and the above post, it makes a difference. Take it from someone who's lived long enough to see and experience the difference. There's people who have experienced loss or heartacheGǪ and fools.

Between the OP and this guy, which would you deem worth your time folks? Prayer and religion promote good will far more than the lack of it. Despite being able to identify bad people from time to time that associated themselves with religion, I have been among people of much better character than those that reject religion. It is a fallacy to think religion makes people bad. You can sh*t on people just as well as an atheistGǪ which some responses on this thread are proving.

And people should remember that miracles are things that didn't have to or were not expected to happen, but did. And those things came from a fellow human being. I think a lot of people miss the point of Jesus' miracles. It ain't the "magic trick" that makes the miracle.

People are people, religious or not... There's a horrible mix in both circles, but I'd rather people be taught to be good for real reasons rather than some promise of an afterlife, which can also make people feel real life is worthless. |

Agree with everything you said except for the second to last sentence.
The discussion of ideologies, especially those that seek to impose their subjective "values" on others deserve to be vetted in the public arena. All ideologies should be free game to discuss. Many superstitious people get offended when their personal beliefs are challenged. However, a sense of offense is not an indication that the beliefs are true or that the individual person is being disrespected.
I can't stand the "That offends me" canard (-as long as the individual was not being attacked). The appropriate response seems to be
a. So What? Or- b. Would you like a moment to get your feelings in check before we proceed with an actual intellectual discussion?
It's gotten to the point in the U.S. where Universities are caving to the hordes of special snowflakes that want "trigger warnings" before something potentially offensive to any specific subset of snowflakes is discussed. At University?! The "trigger warning" should be assumed the moment an individual submits his/her application to an educational institution.
We have our young children (U.S), the ambassadors of our future, reading biology books with warning stickers stating that evolution is a theory not fact. -which is a completely illiterate statement (ironically applied to a school textbook).
The public critical discussion of an ideology should never be taboo.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.
