I used to be (still am) a serious movie fan.
When a movie like Jaws came out in the movie theaters, if it proved successful, a dozen or so hollywood producers would rush out as if "they just invented a cool new original idea for a movie---a movie about an animal terrorizing and killing people!"... And suddenly they'd be movies like GRIZZLY, TENTACLES, FROGS, DAY OF TH ANIMALS, AND PROPHECY!
All these were debatable copy-cats of the Jaws movie, and they were the greatest tribute to how successful a piece of work Jaws was.
Critics and many players are calling the game a failure, and something that was destined not to work because of its design. We're approaching the disconnection of Dust's Server (I don't call it a death of Dust 514 or an end, because the game just ran out of development time, not development interest). ....And SUDDENLY, half a dozen game devs are jumping up saying "by the way, we just finished the go-ahead on a cool new idea for a game--- and MMO set in an imaginary space universe, where players join military entities, and mine for stuff, and it's part spaceship sim shooter, and it's part first person shooter, killing people!"
LOL! O - M - G! Star Citizen? Dead Star? Oh, I know the next titles: "Planetary Takedown!",... "Star Celestial Warriors!" (....no, I said Celestial, not Celesta. heehee).
What's my impression of these suddenly-released games? They make me smile. They mean that CCP succeeded in permanently stamping their ideas and bold concepts into a game market that was as brain-dead as the movie producers before Jaws and Star Wars, etc. Hybrid fps and rpg... working with other players to achieve REAL team objectives... wealth accumulation through industry-OR-combat as the player prefers... This is the area that I feared CCP would fail. Fail to get their bold concepts remembered and tried out by other devs. I'm glad to see it looks like CCP suceeded BIG TIME. These new dev games are the greatest sign that Dust 514 was a daring success. I hope someone in the Devs department is still reading these posts. We have a lot more to thank them for than we can realize right now...
My sweetie just suggested we buy Dust 514 tee-shirts so we can salute the game in style. I agree.
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...
