So originally I planned on getting a full blown top of the line gaming rig, but then I realized. I'm going to be going to college for roughly 6-8 years and considering that, I wouldn't even get to use it almost at all. So would it be more practical to just get a gaming laptop instead of a gaming rig in that case?

Gaming laptops are often more expensive and really not that great compared to desktop computers; though they are just portable.
Also walking around with a high end gaming laptop is an advertisement that screams "Come steal my sweet lootz" when at collage when theres so many people around you cant trust.

Royal brings up a good point, your going to be around a lot of people that would gladly take that off of your hands if your not carefull. If you end up going with the laptop make sure the warranty covers theft, if not buy insurance that does.

Either classical music performance or perhaps a teaching career. 4 years for a Bachelor's degree and then 2-4 more years for a Masters/PHD.

If you are staying in a dorm or something you will much more enjoy a gaming laptop. For their cost and their shorter life span they are a bit prohibitive to a lot of people but if you do not care about these facts then go for it.
Gaming laptops have a life cycle of roughly 2 - 3 years just because upgrades do not come as easy as on a desktop and because only a certain level of hardware can be packed into a portable case.
The people above saying you will have a big flashy sign saying steal me are entirely correct. You can talk about having your room locked and what not but all it takes is a turn of the head while its in the bag in class for it to be gone forever and something that is so portable and worth so much money is always a potential target. Taking that into an environment where most people are in debt and stressed out seriously increases your odds of it going poof. Also ig you are in a dorm with a room mate your room mate is your worst enemy here. Not because they will steal it but it only takes 1 time leaving the door slightly ajar when rushing out to class for you to be down a good deal of money.
That all being said I want to take a moment and be helpful and say make sure you check out Digital Storm's Gaming Laptops as when it comes to price / performance / longevity they are definitely ahead of the pack.
Given what we have all said above about the theft issue I would very highly recommend going with the Triton and upgrading it to whatever level you prefer. It is a bit less "show offy" and an all around good system at whatever level of parts you put into it.
Look into insurance policies like squaretrade or others. When you are carrying around a $3k laptop you really do not want to have your day ruined permanently by some one tripping over a power cable or spilling a coffee or whatever it may be. Statistically speaking the person that destroys your computer in class will not be able to afford to replace it even if they wanted too. |

What kind of place has 6-8 years of college ?
Pardon me if I am unfamiliar, but here in Canada, or Quebec at least, college is maximum 3 years ( if you don't fail classes )

In Ontario, University takes away quite a bit of time...
3/4 years gets the undergraduate degree... Depending on course.
Year or few years to get your Master's...
Doctorate is hard to come across... I know it works by contributing something to the society... Like a phD in chemistry.... The guy who made VESPR theory got one.
If he didn't make that, he'd be at a Master's still... According to my teachers and councillors at school

look at laptops and you will see it costs so much to come close to desktops, parts aren't in the largest supply, as in they're not full sized PC parts so they're more expensive as they being made specifically smaller. ergo a higher cost is incurred.
if you want it for on the go then that's good, it will help with classes because you can bring it with you, you can always plug the laptop into a TV too
there's reasons for and against both, also with a gaming PC sure you can buy one to run 2016 games but will it run 2019 games? there's buying a gaming PC then there's buying a future-proofed gaming PC
it's all expensive no matter how you look at it
also think is this the chance you have to buy one and will you not be able to? I bought all my stuff whilst living with my parents, I have everything, I don't play current gen but I mean everything people are gobsmacked at what I have
