1. Develop Update
2. Update is pre-preliminary tested by developers, any noted bugs or glitches are fixed
3. Update is sent to be tested by a group of professional game testers, who further test for bugs and glitches, and those are fixed before the next step.
4. Update is released on a private test server, with a few thousand of the game population receiving access to the server randomly, the players then note any bugs or glitches they encounter, and the dev team corrects them.
5. Update is released, bugs and glitches should not be occurring or be very minimal due to the rigorous testing it underwent.
I feel like if CCP used this method, there would be far less bugs/glitches in this game. I know that the dev team does test the update, but a dev team by itself can not catch every single bug, even if they tried. This is why there needs to be a testing server that goes online prior to the scheduled release of an update so that bugs and glitches will be minimized and hopefully extinguished.

I was thinking this sort of thing was being done already with DUST considering it was being produced in China. I'll let the reader infer their own racism induced suggestions to that statement.
Oh h*ll, I'll just go ahead and say it ok? Chinese kids could have been used for massive, forced testing both in that they are in China, known for it's harsh communistic draconian labor stereotypes and that Chinese kids, like Japanese are stereotypically math, gamer brainiac robots.
Oh well, if only there were a test server CCP could employ for this sort of thing instead of forced foreign laborGǪ [gasp] wait a tick!

CCP does have a test server for these needs called "Singularity" but requires you to download a whole new client to access. It would also require CCP to effectively pay Song for another game, doubling the costs to run the game in its entirety.
I'm pretty sure CCP will implement this with NotLegion though.

Having testing done by members of the actual player base is honestly the best way to go, not only is it free to employ them, but the players of the game are more likely to find bugs and glitches than any other people out there.

The biggest issue with Dust was the fact that Dust developers were obligated to the Eve time frame meaning server side work had to either be squeezed into a 30 minute window or wait until Eve was doing a deployment giving them a longer down time. This is why in my past life before that permaban I said repeatedly that Dust should have been on its own server completely while connecting to Eve via API which was essentially what was happening anyway.
Can you imagine if the Dust devs would have been able to say. "Hey guys, the server will be down for 3 hours to implement the new update" or "The server is experiencing a hang up after that last deployment so we are going to go ahead and reboot right quick" or maybe even "We had a small delay in launching the last update so we are going to have to extend down time 30 minutes and NOT stop halfway through patching because the server is turning on whether we like it or not."
I also always contended that the daily down times hurt player numbers in a very interesting manner. People that wanted to grind would end up on another game or going to bed while people just getting home from work or just waking up would say oh well Dust is down and go on with something else. This caused a vicious cycle of people not wanting to get on until certain times because they knew there would not be any good matches really screwing over most of the world outside of the US in terms of their Dust experience. |
