But why not just go ahead and build a PS5 instead of making a brand new PS4? Well, I guess pretty much all ps4 owners would rage hard . Maybe it's "just" an upgrade, which would make sense since something like this was rumored a couple months ago. That said, I think that if it is a first step towards "upgradability" of a console it is very welcome: at the end of the day, consoles have always been very specialised PCs, and if you are able to upgrade a console this means two things: 1. Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo or whetever, will be able to release a "new" version of their consoles by upgrading only some parts of it , let's say the Video Card, hence they will be able to lower the production costs of the "new" piece of hardware. Instead of "Playstation 5" you could possibly have a PS4 with the equivalent of a GTX 970, another one with the equivalent of a 980 etc. 2. Consoles will keep their strenghts: a closed system, impossible (not impossible, but at least much harder) to "hack", the ease of access etc. the exclusives, first party games, the ease of production on a unique (or, in this case, semi-unique) platform capable of unimaginable optimization.
