Okay, so the Dust 514 shutdown took me completely by surprise and I'm really confused as to why they would shut this game down as it appeared to me to be wildly successful. I realize the launch was a little shaky and the initial reviews maybe weren't the best but that was then.

said it came as no surprise since it didn't have a large playerbase which is way off imho. Everytime I never logged on in the last year there weren't at least 20,000 players on the server which is ridiculous and many times we had in excess of 30,000 players online. Many successful games don't even have a fraction of this playerbase and continue on successfully.
This game seemed to be a huge success for CCP by my accounts. Can anybody shed some light on why CCP clearly thought otherwise? |

The number you are seeing every time you log in are all players currently on "Tranquillity" which also includes all players both on Dust and Eve Online; if you pop on over to "Eve Offline" which is a site where you can monitor all of CCP's server activities, where you can also see the active player count and for Dust's average count currently sits around 1,500 players; which is a very small number.
To the reasons why its shutting down:: 1) Their contract with Sony is coming to an end. 2) Sony is taking the PS3's online network offline at the end of the year. 3) Moving to PC will let them do what they like with the game in many ways the PS3 just couldn't and wouldn't ever be able to handle and would let them update the game as frequently as they wish. 4) Their servers are better than Sony's; so the stability like lag etc wouldn't be a thing. 5) Because CCP

Just to clarify one thing, there has been no official announcement that the PS3 online support will be **** down at the end of the year. At least nothing I could find.
That is most likely closer to a rumor and conspiracy theory than it is truth or leak. The PS3 is still being used by too many people, and for Pete's sake, FF XI only ended its support on the PS2 last November, so any notion that Sony would end online support for the PS3 much sooner than it did with the PS2 is ridiculous.

Any double entendre is unintended I assure you.

The exclusivity agreement with Sony has long ended and there is no expiration on a game being published.
Sony has made it clear they are keeping the PS3 network as long as it is profitable AKA no one knows when it will go down.
The PS4 is just a lower power PC but does not come with the crazy need for cross hardware optimizations. Sony does not limit the number of updates they just require a QA process. CCP is going to PC because they know that New Eden can never be sustained inside the Sony system which has FAR different billing terms than billing cards on your own.
Dust was not on Sony servers, it was on Tranquility and on CCP owner battle servers. |

All you need to read is the entire "Future of Dust 514" thread and that should give you a very good understanding of the situation.
