I started working towards it when we were told Dust was ending. Before then I was occasionally using the State Assault ck.0 but because I didn't have Caldari Assault 5, I didn't have the bonuses that I really needed to make it work properly.
So what do I do when I get there? Do people use their ck.0s all the time or do they use C/1-Series for "normal" battles and only go to ck.0 for really heavy stomping?
I once read someone saying that for them it's either proto or BPO, there's nothing between. Is that really what people do?
I have no problems running ck.0 all the time and with over 200m ISK, I don't think I'm going to have any problems keeping up a supply of them. The few times I've used ck.0 suits, they seemed really good but I was scared to use them for fear of losing them because of poor skills. Now I'll have CalAss 5, I think I'm ready for action.
Right when Dust is ending.... Bad timing! :) |

Should be able to use them by tomorrow. Just got to get used to using hit and run caldari tactics.
With the amount of isk you have and the limited amount of time left in the game, imo just run proto.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. To get the full experience of ck.0, I would have to just run it full time anyway.
I still run Hawk scout a lot, at the start of each match and also if I need to get out to hack some installations, and of course the Kampo logi I goto from you. That's a great little suit! But I'm really looking forward to the CalAss ck.0. From what I've seen of it with my State Ass ck.0, it's a pretty great suit.
Caldari hit-and-run tactics? Yeah, I should be OK at that. I do have a tendency to bite off more than I can chew - taking on heavies in my Hawk being probably the silliest. But I've learnt to be really careful with my more expensive suits....
I'm keen to have a look at the Balac's. I have some Frame's as well. Looking forward to seeing what I can do with them...
I've asked elsewhere, but I might as well ask here as well - what damage mods do people use for this level of suit? Caldari sacrifice tank for damage because shields are high slots. Do people bother with damage mods, or just tank up as high as they can go and hope the weapon is up to it? That would be the Kaala RR and the Kaala Magsec. |

PARKOUR PRACTIONER wrote:For damage mods go KRINS or complex, i use 2 normally, five if im in a certain mood. BPO CA? You mean the master BPO that only devs have or the standard CA BPO, or Rasetsu CA? If your running all shields on CA your doing it wrong. Two complex shields, two KRINS, complex shields recharger, IMHO. For hit and run you want good regen, so throw on a couple shields regulators and a ferro scale plate.
Also try the ARR, but never. EVER. Hipfire. You have natural reduction to kick? i think but it ain't worth it unless a scout sneaks up, wait, hold on. You can hipfire the ARR for a bit but the regular RR, NO. For sidearm better off with matari SMG, but thats just a preference or a magnum (bolt pistol).
Sidenote, maybe you should stop by Barbershop, or not, business is slow, for help on that Hawk scout if you want, maybe you won't get so pissed at it if scout things were explained. I ran CS a little so i can give you a little advice but not a lot cause i prefer min & gal scouts which is different playstyle.
Done rambling hope i helped. Thanks for the help.
I was talking about the Rasetsu. What's wrong with running all shields on a CA? You mean I should run armour as well, or damage mods?
I do understand TTK and TTD. The idea is to have TTK lower than TTD, so that you can get in and out quickly - the less time I'm in the fray the less likely someone is gonna take me out from the side or behind.
I use the Ishukone ARR on one of my fits - awesome rifle. But yes, you're right hipfiring is no good unless close range. I don't like the iron sights of the ARR - I guess I'm just used to the RR sights and yes, I try to use the RR ADS as much as possible. I have used it at a pinch hipfiring, but these days I put a magsec on as a firearm and switch to that - much more effective.
I don't like the bolt pistol. I have a problem with the high charge time and the fact that more often than not the target moves before the damn thing fires. They're fine for stationary targets - as a scout taking out a sniper from 3 feet away works wonders. :)
As for scouts, yeah, I do get a bit confused. I have a Gal alt and she runs scout most of the time - very effective with an AR. Get close in and move to fast to get hit and if you do, it just takes the shields out and then into the minimal scout armour and she usually survives. Try the same thing with the Hawk, and it's all over in a flash. I've learnt to scout at a distance and use the RR that comes with the Hawk for taking out snipers at range or the bolt pistol close up. Emphasis on stealth.

bane sieg wrote:Yay more scrubs with rail rifles Well, it's the Caldari rifle. Since I have trained almost exclusively Caldari, I have to keep training the suits to 5 and necessarily, for the bonuses, train the weapons to 5. Not much difficulty in the logic there.
As for being a scrub, I'm not doing anything I can to win, I'm just training the best skills for what I already have in the limited time available. There's a thread about the definition of a scrub and all sorts of definitions floating around, but I don't see how I fit any of them at least training RRs. |

Well, I ground to Caldari Assault 5, and now I have my Assault ck.0 suit I'm learning lots about what to do with it.
For a start, all the suggestions of damage mods are fine and I understand the point of them, but I'm finding that they take too much away from my shields. I live in Australia and network lag is a real problem here - I can often be hit by someone I didn't see to my flank and lose all my shields before I even know they're hitting me. It only takes a second or two. So I probably need more shields rather than more damage. I really want the damage to be honest, but I need to survive long enough to inflict it.
On the plus side, the network lag works in my favour when I surprise someone. So even with reduced damage, I can take out someone with lesser shields before they even know it.
I wish I lived in a perfect world without network lag, but unfortunately, I have to deal with it. Shields would seem to be the way to do that. Anyone have any other ideas? |

As an aside, the Balac's and Frame's Assault ck.0 are fabulous. Just tanking up both of them, I can get to about 670HP shields on the Frame's and over 700HP on the Balac's. Both of those are probably over the top for what I really need but it's nice to know they can get there. I probably won't use them for a while. I only have 3 Balac's and about 57 Frame's, and I'm fitting them with officer weapons to suit. Very nice. :)
I still think I have a lot of learning to do about the Assault role. I've been scouting most of the 8 months or so I've been playing Dust (since I started again after leaving the Beta, for those who would enquire). Most recently I've discovered Logistics and am amazed at what I've been able to achieve with that. I've been using my Rasetsu for a while to try to learn Assault but I'm not very good at it yet. Hopefully I'll pick it up fast enough to use the Assault ck.0 effectively. :) |

PARKOUR PRACTIONER wrote:There is a weird thing with sbields, when lagging i get blue shields flare, no damage to them but all the damage to you. For that i reset my PS3, and log in and out and that usually clears it up.
As for shields you can do whatever you feel comfortable, if you don't use damage mods try stacking shields then throwing on a shield recharger and a couple shield regulators, that way you have higher HP and good regen. Or use one damage mod, one shield, recharger, and the rest shields.
Since shields go first and faster then armor stacking shields won't do too much more outside of generally HP buff, thats why the regen is really important, don't know exact TTK all i know is death is quick for shield users. Do NOT stack armor MHO, takes away the hit and run if you have the movement of a sentinel in molasses.
Cover to cover is key so you need all the movement you can get. And use that Caldari RANGE on those RRs but keep moving and watch your back. You get good overwatch someone WILL try to sneak upon you. Currently i like AR on CA cause its a classic. Also have a shotgun CA fit that makes shotgunning interesting. This is the eternal "problem" for Caldari. They're all about range and regen. You can't get in close and fight it out, you'll just lose. So you have to stay at a distance and hopefully out of range of whatever your opponent is firing at you. If that opponent happens to also be using Caldari gear that could get interesting. It then comes down to your weapons against their shields and vice versa, TTK/TTD. If they are running more armour as well, then it could be a problem. But the point of armour (or lack of it for Caldari) is that they're lighter and faster and that's supposed to be a good thing - but not if you are just standing there and they hit you from the flank and you don't wake up to the fact (network lag) until you're almost done.
Yes, cover to cover is key, but there's so little cover in this game - everything is about "gun game" and that's not what Caldari are about. Gun game is fine for Gallente, for instance, who rely on armour and dive in quick and deadly, up close and personal. Caldari can't do that no matter how high they stack shields.
So, then, is the whole stacking shield thing basicly not really the way to go? I know from EvE that shield tanking is about having enough shields to survive an attack, and enough regen to have those shields back for the next attack. If it's sustained, your shield regen has to be better than the DPS you're taking. The damage from most guns in this game is around 40-50 HP/s but can be a lot higher in one go - shotguns are a good example, as are snipers and bolt pistols. So you have to be able to get out of the way if something like that is attacking you, because your regen can never be high enough to deal with those.
Taking as an example the Assault ck.0 - I can get close to 600HP of shields maxing out the high slots with complex extenders. But then that makes the shield regen delay too high, even maxing out complex regs. I believe I would be better off with less shields to bring the delay down to something more acceptable <1s, and recharging at a rate that will deal at least with the sort of automatic fire I'll mostly get hit with. Perhaps, then about 400HP with close to 100HP/s regen and sub 1s delay? If I do that, I will only use 3 high slots for shields and have 2 left over for damage mods. |

You made the point that death is quick for shield users. That's probably a statement specific to Dust, but in EvE that's not really the case. It's more a role thing. In Dust, though, I've given some thought to this concept and I think I might be onto at least a partial answer. People think in terms of tanking, mostly for armour. And so they think in the same terms for shields. But they're comparing apples and oranges. The two types of tank function completely differently. Armour is a lot hardier, but a lot slower to repair. So you need a lot of it, but it can take a while to get it back. Shields on the other hand tend to be quick to drop but really fast to regen.
I thought it was somewhat unfortunate that CCP saw fit to make the shield regen on Caldari starter suits ridiculously low. Shield regen is supposed to be fast, to compensate for the quickness with which they fall. As an aside, I note that CCP does seem to have a bias towards armour, such that the implementation of shields is inferior to that of armour. Personally, I've always thought armour was the "last resort" after your shields have failed. At least that's the way it works in EvE. But it does go even further than that. Perhaps it's not shields that CCP has a bias against so much as Caldari. I've noted many instances where Caldari weaponry is inferior and yet they nerf them - the bold pistol being one.
I know the standard answer to all this is to just use another race's gear, but if you're a committed Caldari, then that's not feasible. With all my SP sunk in Caldari everything, I have to find a way to make this all work. So I will continue to see what can be done with shields and fast regen, and I'll continue to use the RR and ARR for which I've trained. Even were CCP to give us the respec people are asking for, I'd probably just respec more focused on my current use of Caldari gear. I treat it as an intellectual exercise, so I enjoy the challenge... :) |

Raven-747 wrote:Watch out for shotguns because they WILL one hit you unless you stack shields like crazy along with armor. Hey Raven!
Yes, shotguns one hit me. I've gotten pretty good at avoiding them, but every so often they hit me from behind, and I don't even know it until I'm done. I can stack shields and armour, of course, but then I lose both the weapon damage and my speed of movement. I think of the Caldari Assault a bit like a PT boat - all damage and fast but hardly any defence. The minimal defence that the shields offer is best used for firing at range. Hopefully that also means I will have less problems with shotguns, other than on shotty scouts.
I know I can get about 650HP of shields and 350HP of armour, but that armour won't last long and with the pitiful repair rate on Caldari armour, I might as well not have any, unless I use reactives. That 650HP of shields will also take a while to regen, and will probably have a 1-2s delay. So I think I'm still probably better off to use smaller shields with faster regen and minimal delay, and not sacrifice speed. |

I note that I think they are pretty good myself, and the reload speed and lack of kick that I get from my Caldari assault suit bonuses are really good.
But for someone who doesn't get those bonuses, nor even the base level operation skills using militia RRs, I would have thought that RRs were not really all that good. The charge time is long and they kick like mules. Even the ARR will kick to an extent. What do people find so good about them? |

Some people might say it is scrubby because the Rail Rifle has awesome sweet spots where, depending on the dropsuit you're shooting at, if you positon yourself at just the right range from the redberry you are able to kill them with almost CoD like speed. Plus I am pretty sure myofib jumpy people would probably think Rail Rifles are scrubby because of how effective the Rail Rifle is at taking out jumpies from a distance. I think people like the Rail Rifle because of how effective it is at range while still being able to accomplish something in CQC so long as you practice with it. Overall though the Rail Rifle is not scrubby...it can just be annoying at times. While everyone was running scouts I switched from cal ass to gal ass with rr lol Now THAT is scrubby! :) |
