Little pricey when compared to consoles, but it'll work well enough. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3HbtjX You could probably even go with a much cheaper case. But man, I'm excited for the pc part picker threads once we get the first set of specs for the new game. Yeah is the case necessary? Would any case do? Or does it need to be a specific size?
The case isn't strictly speaking necessary, you could actually build something yourself if you're handy. The case type has to support the motherboard type (just so the screws line up) but there is quite a bit of selection and variation within that category.
Khanid Logi and Tanker, sometimes AV Heavy or Sniper.

The case is very important. It doesn't have to be so pricy, you can get a decent one for ~$60 that has enough fans, is big enough for big GPUs and has all the USB 3.0 and HDD/SSD rack needed ^^ A good case will allow you to cool down your pc very efficiently. Don't get an ITX motherboard if you plan on gaming, get an ATX that is not too cheap (~$90) from msi, gigabyte or asus.
I'm not kidding...The case isn't strictly speaking necessary xD You can run an entire PC without one, provided you keep it from being in direct contact with other conductors, and provide enough airflow over the area. The Case is no doubt important for maintaining the life of the components, and (in properly designed cases anyway) maintaining airflow for cooling...but unlike a Mobo, CPU, PSU, RAM, and Storage it isn't necessary to turn the thing on xD...and it isn't entirely crazy to try to fabricate a case yourself if you've got access to the tools and materials, combined with the motivation to make it happen...but if you factor the value of your time...it'll probably still be cheaper to buy a case.
