The end is finally nigh. Haven't played in a while (2y) so I guess this will be my last post. I'll use the opportunity to reflect a bit, consider it my obituary.
Closed/Open Beta: The beginning is pretty hazy but I think I managed to squeeze into closed beta by buying a Merc Pack or something. Coming from Iceland I was always a bit bummed out to have missed out on starting EVE early on. I had done CS 1.5 scrims before so I wanted to hop on to the Dust 514 train from the beginning. Dust was the first console game I played so my first week I was cannon fodder content. I have fond memories of being proto stomped by guys in the Imperfects hiding/glitching inside of those things that shoot the rockets from the ground.
3dge of D4rkness: Can't remember how it came to be but I joined probably one of the coolest corps in New Eden, 3dge of D4rkness. If you've never heard of it before it is/was basically a tiny family corp run by a married couple; Maffia- Thug & Latina-Maffia. I loved their comraderie on comms as they filled the rest of us in on who's turn it was to do what house hold chore and if there was going to be sex that night or not. It was the most friendly online game cohort I've ever played with. Very fond memories squading up with pinballuk and other lovely people.
KhroniqBeast: In 3dge of D4rkness I probably played the most with KhroniqBeast, a heavy from the old days. We'd roam around, him tearing sh*t up and shouting on comms "come get some!" and "ohh sh*t!!" as he got low on health or his HMG overheated. I'd follow around as a Minmatar Logi with a Mass Driver and rep tool. We played so much together I was on good speaking terms with his mother. One of my favorite moments was when he had to jump into a closet because some inspector was at the door, and he couldn't be seen (some weird no guests policy). So me and KroniqBeast (and the rest of 3dge of D4rkness) were pretty sick of the Imperfects. Having been inspired by plenty of spy and deceit stories from EVE we conjured up the plan to infiltrate the Imperfects to spy and what not.
Imperfects infiltration: However after a few days/weeks we really started to like it there, so we eventually decided to come clean to Kiane Spero. Thankfully he was pretty cool with it. First I was part of IMPSwarm but shortly after I was moved to Internal Error. As a programmer I really liked that name, something I'd see every now and then in stack traces when programming, but at a time saw on a daily basis in Dust 514. Ohh you bug ridden game!
IE, Ancient Exiles, TeamPlayers: Playing with IE., Imperfects, Ancient Exiles, and TeamPlayers was a lot of fun, got a chance to play with some of the all time greatest players Dust 514 has been graced with. I can't remember the politics of the name changes nor the transitions but some of my most memorable times were joking around with 13ar and chubby chasing CHICAGOCUBS4EVER.
FanFest 2013 & 2014: The most fun times were hands down FanFest. In 2013 I was very fortunate to party with ReGnYuM and Telcontar Dunedain. That year there was a PvP tournament where there were 16 Dust players and 5 EVE players on a team. Those matches were the most fun of all. The screaming and shouting across the room, wrongly placed orbitals. Glorious.
Lazer focused on Playstation 3 development!
FanFest 2014 takes the cake though. What CCP did to the Dust 514 players coming to Iceland that year was horrendous. We show up to the first talk, admittedly still a bit drunk from the night before, and in the first 10 mins or so we get "So what we are going to do now, is to make a new FPS on PC, cloned from Dust". That is when Dust 514 died for me, not by this announcement. We were so bummed out we effectively decided to drown our sorrows for theremainder of the festival. Funnily enough this was the most fun time I've ever had with Dust! ReGnYuM was at it for another year with an addition of Zatara Rought. Memory is hazy but superb partying with those two animals.
CCP: I guess I can now safely say that I was in fact working for CCP (2013 - 2014). Not on Dust though, but Customer Support for EVE. To begin with I was very enthusiastic engaging with the CPM and giving the Shanghai team my feedback. But it mostly fell on deaf ears, the CPM was great though and I can vouch that they really did fight for the players, but their hands are very tied. For example CPM member Laurent Cazaderon was very vocal and against CCP's approach to Legion, so much in fact they kicked him out (or he left) and silently removed him from the Dust keynote slides. In my mind, he was the best CPM member there ever was (also the best looking).
After a while my boss approached me and frankly asked me to stop. It was very demoralizing. Up until that point I had been giving the scoop to the dev team very early on how to reproduce certain glitches, the melee stamina glitch for example. After being asked to stop I mostly clued my GM coworkers in on a need to know basis when they had to clean up some sh*t, like buggy district locking.
Concluding Remarks: When looking back I originally got into the game to jump on the train early, to have some fun. As everybody knows Dust 514 is a special kind of infestation of bugs and bad gameplay but that doesn't matter to me. The by far most entertaining part was the social aspect, voice comms, meeting and partying with the players.
It was fun repping and smothering you with a MD, bye bye!
