This bitter old vet is cautiously optimistic. I was sold on the promise of DUST 514, large coordinated battles that would make a lasting difference in the EVE universe. Complex fittings with a huge array of skills to give it depth, and a persistence mechanism to make losses mean something.
We got some of that, but too much was lost to PS3 limitations and management failures.
I fell in love with Dropships from the first day they were transformed from automatic elevators into a true ship that required skill to fly. I lived through the many joys and frustrations as CCP attempted to balance them, but in the end they just couldn't do it. They couldn't make vehicles what they should be because they couldn't give them unique roles that didn't compete one-on-one with a dropsuit. Thus for balance purposes a vehicle could only be as powerful as a single suit. It is my hope that in the next incarnation they learn from these mistakes and the passion of my fellow pilots and drivers. We generated hundreds of posts and I hope they mine those for wisdom.
As fun as it is to play on the PS3 while sitting on the couch, the console is simply too limiting a platform for a game of this scope. Some have claimed that the PC is a bad choice due to competition and hackers, but I don't see that as insurmountable. EVE: Phoenix doesn't have to have all the polish of the other shooters because it has all the elements I mentioned above. DUST was never the best shooter on the PS3, but we all stuck with it for all its unique qualities. A true integration with EVE would be enough to make it thrive even with the competition.
From what I've read it won't cost much for the hardware needed to run it, and you can always hook it up to the TV so it won't feel all that different from the PS3. I would love to see the game support VR for those of us with the hardware, without making it mandatory, but that means they would have to develop with VR in mind so as to make the movement system not guaranteed to make you sick in VR.
Maybe we will yet get to experience the original vision. |
