So I saw some people talk about this, and was thinking about it myself and figured I would see what the community thinks about a possible Nova melee weapon that you can main. So here are some ideas I had for a possible Nova Katana or other kind of Nova Sword...
- Should be either a sidearm weapon or possibly a piece of equipment, to keep people from just insta-knifing with a sword after lighting you up with an SMG. It should be something you have to equip.
- Should take more stamina to swing than a knife.
- Different variations just like any other weapon. Three for each tier - one that does a most damage, has high CPU and PG requirements, and takes more stamina to swing/one that does least damage and takes less CPU and PG/and one that is in the middle
- Ability to deal x2 damage to the back
- Swing slightly slower than the nova knife
- Better variants/all variants should only allow you to equip a pistol or maybe an SMG. No one-hit killers and Nova Sword combinations. Either Nova Sword only, or Nova sword plus automatic weapons that fire bullets.
- NO FINISHING MOVE ANIMATION THAT FREEZES YOU IN ONE PLACE. Sure it would look cool but I'm tired of getting shot to death slowly as I knife someone in B3. Just stick 'em and move on.
- Pressing the melee button swings the sword, holding it performs a high stamina lunge attack that does more damage.
I understand CCP is going to introduce a camo suit, if I'm not mistaken. I think it's very important to be careful while balancing the Nova Sword and Camo suit combination but it's difficult to give feedback for two things that don't exist yet. Also, I was going to say this could be one more thing that makes Dust unique, since other FPS's don't have multiple melee weapons, but I think Halo has a sword that even lunges and look how popular Halo is (even though I only ever played the first one). So that means this is doable, right?
So what do you all think: Nova Sword - Yay or nay? |

Nay.
f you really want to be a stealthy ninja with an energy sword, go check out Borderlands 2. The idea of introducing some sword into a shooter like Dust is just silly. I mean we used to joke around in other games that the knife swing was so long range that everyone had a sword, and the entire game turned into rushing people and knifing them. Not exactly what I want for Dust. |

There are two objections I have to this, both theme and gameplay-wise.
Thematically a sword doesn't seem to make much sense to me. EVE's setting attempts to be semi-realistic, as much as a sci-fi setting can be altogether realistic. That is, using a sword over a shotgun in Dust would make about as much sense as using a sword over a shotgun in real life.
The other issue, that of gameplay, would pose a pretty serious challenge. How exactly do you do swords in such a way that they are a fun addition and balanced alongside stuff like shotguns? How would you keep a short range close combat gun balanced with a point blank melee weapon? Would swords have to be instant-kill weapons? Two-shot-kill? Would sword gameplay be about hiding around corners and killing people or being killed within the space of a couple seconds?
Honestly, I think the idea could use looking into and I wouldn't say it'd never happen, but swords do seem a bit odd alongside the slew of powerful firearms we have to choose from, and although this may be just me, but I have never really enjoyed the juxtaposition of sword and gun gameplay. In the end, it's one guy flailing his sword around like a maniac trying to hit someone in first person (good luck with that) while his target backpedals and strafes and tries to gun his attacker down. |
