I always thought that a good game mode would be one designed around planetary infrastructure in which one team is designated position to attack while the other has to defend them as long as possible.
The game mode initially sees the Defending Team securing and setting up in defensive positions around Strontium Pump Stations which are supplying raw materials to a reinforced Shielded Structure in the back ground of the map where the Defending Team spawns.
Attackers deploy from MCC's and must push onto the points to take control of them. The aim of this phase of the game is to vent the majority of the Strontium from the Pump Stations so that the Shields fail and the teams can move on. Basically in order to lower these shields the Attacking Team must take and hold one or both of the points. The longer they hold one of the points the faster the Strontium vents, if the vents are recaptured by the defending team and closed the Strontium levels slowly stabilise at normal levels.
Once the shield are down the Attacking Team's goal it to push up to the main socket where the Defending Team spawns and their goal is to establish a beacon in the facility so that the MCC or some Orbital Vessel can destroy it.
If I were feeling really nasty I'd change the control the pump station to destroy and have vehicles be able to damage them while the defending teams have to repair them to keep them functioning.

It would be really cool.
AND
I am sure it could fit in the EVE universe. :P
Sure would. The Caldari love their blood sports and thinking logically that since Dusters and Capsuleers are celebrities amongst normal people hiring us to fight in gladiatorial combats with bettering, sponsors, etc would be completely understandable.
I could imagine a cluster wide broad cast sport where cloned soldiers essentially run through incredibly deadly gauntlets for peoples amusement.

Personally I don't think blood-sport is a big enough presence in the Eve universe to excuse it.
REALLY?!!! You keep looking at mechanics as a definition of what is in the Eve Universe. I'm looking at the actual lore and setting and treat mechanics that don't line up with that as a mistake/problem to be removed, not lore authority.
There is if I recall a large culture of blood sports in the Caldari state.

Under the Initial Attempts and Failures it is confirmed that Echelon Entertainment initially failed to produce a form of entertainment suited for the Caldari audience where they were more commonly used to watching combat tournaments.
Additionally from the synopsis of the Caldari people we get this little gem.
https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Caldari#See_Also
"To curb their aggressive tendencies, the Caldari actively pursue and sponsor a range of sporting activities. Many of these are bloody, gladiatorial-like competitions, while others are more like races. Whatever the sport, they love betting on the outcome, making gambling a massive industry in the State."
For reference this does not mean I support the idea of FFA matches. I traditionally in most FPS games loath them as they lack any semblance of tactical gameplay. That being said a few odd assertions have been made in this thread.

Couldn't disagree more.
It is my belief that Dust can mean so much more to EVE through the establishment of more links both mechanical and in terms of lore. Lore in this game opens up the world of New Eden and through it by establishing ourselves as both economically viable, useful mechanically, and also interesting assets to the existing EVE player base Dust will advance.
Also the Empress is dead, only a few Tribes of the Minmatar actively pursue martial tradition, and the Gallente aren't interested in balance just total cultural domination.
