I was hoping for lots of motion sick players to dump their rigs on ebay before I realized my PC was not up to the standard.
Real shame having a 3 year old motherboard that lacks the required number of USB 3.0 ports. Requiring 3 usb 3.0 ports was a serious design flaw on their part. I would have given in and bought a couple of 970s and bought a rift used but I simply have no reason to build a whole new computer.

I agree on the trend. Star Citizen started it all with their Kickstarter that blew away any expectations of money collected. I am pretty sure they have hit $100 million by now but I have stopped keeping up with it.

I expected some pretty high end requirements but I think they went a little far.
I can run 3 screens of Eve on maxed out settings with 1080p @ 120hz so why I can not run a couple of 1 - 2 inch monitors in a helmet with 1080p @ 90 hz is beyond me.

A pre alpha does not even have the full concept flushed out and is missing at least half of the major functionality that has been decided on. It is essentially just a proof of concept before major work starts.
A fake pre alpha on the other hand is one that is a few months away from being a launch title with a major purchase such as the Oculus Rift. If it is not a fake pre alpha there is going to be some seriously unhappy people when they get their shiny new toy.
Obviously CCP is free to title their releases in whatever way they wish but I would have to call this either misrepresented or heading for a very ugly failure.
EDIT:
Alpha status would be when most of the framework has been decided on and started implementing and testing.
Beta the point where a good deal of the game is complete but many bugs still persist that are in the process of being worked out before launch.
It is funny when you think about these stages and look at Dust.......

okay I looked this up and figured it out, don't know why it seemed so bizarre to me at the time...
"Three unused USB 3.0 ports and one unused 2.0 port are recommended.
1x 3.0 USB port for the headset 1x 3.0 USB port for the 3D Positional Tracker
1x 3.0 USB port for Oculus Touch (not actually required)
1x 2.0 USB port for Xbox wireless controller (easily would work with a USB hub if any of the other 2.0 ports on your computer are tied up by mouse and keyboard, etc)"
deezy dabest wrote:Maken Tosch wrote:To be honest, I always suspected that my 10-year-old, $3,500 rig was not going to handle Oculus. For one thing, EVE is 99% empty space, filled with low poly models of everything but stations, the ship you are currently looking at, and ships you are close enough to be bumping. Because of that, despite looking very, very pretty, it has very low hardware requirements, which is important for a MMO. Hell, you can run it on intel graphics. It's not a very good benchmark for how demanding other games can be for 2160x1200 at a rock solid 90+fps
The second thing is the stated requirements are actually... not the minimum requirements. They're the recommended requirements. If you plug the rift into a computer with a GTX 760 its not going to flash "THIS COMPUTER DOES NOT MEET MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS YOUR OCULUS RIFT WILL SELF DESTRUCT IN 5 SECONDS". Probably.
They're going out of the way to avoid saying what the true minimum requirements are because they don't really want a bunch of customers with the bare minimum unable to actually play half the stuff on the oculus store. They want everyone who buys the thing to be sporting a 970 and i5 4690 so that they will buy and play all of the things on their store without complaining about nausea inducing hitching and fps drops.
There are some games, demos, etc that probably won't really need a 970. The main appeal to VR for me was actually going back and reliving games like Half Life 2 and Oblivion, and I don't imagine those games would strictly need a 970 to play in VR. I'd dare to assume that a lesser card could handle virtual movie theater duty, if a cellphone can. Systems with i5 2500k processors released in 2011 can meet the required cpu performance.
The support site even suggests getting USB 3.0 PCIE expansion cards for older motherboards to cover missing ports.
Anyways, I guess you'll have a lot more information on what is actually needed to run all sorts of first and third-party applications at a satisfactory level when people have the things in their hands in April-ish. Maybe I'll plug in my GTX 560 Ti or even try to get it running on my laptop for the hell of it and see what it can take. |

2160 x 1200 @ 90hz < Oculus
1920 x 1080 @ 120hz < 1080p
2560 x 1440 (Unknown refresh rate but 40hz minimum as I get zero flicker even when using cardboard) < My Nexus 6p
3840 x 2160 @ 30hz < My main monitor / TV
A marginal difference at best.
The Oculus Rift is pretty much the lowest resolution of all the screens I have around me.
I run Eve at roughly 5600x1080 @ 120hz with it stretched out across my 3 lower monitors. That is with all settings set to max.

Wow that looked amazing but I got a headache just from watching so I know VR isn't for me .
A shame though .
On a side note , I played a game while I was on earlier and died and tried to get back into the game but all I got was the circle ( it wouldn't allow me to get back into the match , you know ... pick my fit to deploy ) while watching the battlefield , then I got booted .
Is this a new bug or what .?. does anyone know .
That looked amazing though but I heard of people acquiring motion sickness ( VR headsets ) and my head started hurting just from watching this so I know it's not for me .

Don't write it off too quick, there's other things to consider here: you're watching someone else whipping their head around and flipping the fighter around in circles. It's like getting motion sickness when riding in a car vs driving it yourself. You're not going to be seeing that bizarre side-by-side picture while wearing the headset (that's just how it gets output to video capture) and the point of view is going to be perfectly following the movement of your head.
The screen has a high refresh rate, and a whole bunch of technobabble specifically designed to make it feel more "natural" and reduce motion sickness.
plus there's more things to do than high speed spaceship dogfights :P
Find a buddy to demo it for you, or a store if they open up demo stations at malls (which I certainly hope they do) |

Yeah , I might do that .
My nephew that got me started in this game does testing for a ton of companies so he gets things a lot sooner then most but were in separate states now so I don't have the advantage that I use to .
He's been playing EVE for years and I've played some games that are out now some years ago , he's a real tech head so I know he's into this , he loves Star Citizen .
I like to smoke and drink some while playing and I know that I couldn't do that while using a VR , he had one some time ago ... you know when they first came out and he's always on the latest tech and when I use to use his VR before , I use to get headaches but maybe now it's better .
It's old tech with a twist , so now maybe they will work out the kinks but I just think nowadays , people are in a rush to make a buck so their not trying to work out the kinks until they see that what they believed would happened , didn't .
Hope this isn't another one of those cases .
I use to love going over his house to play Elite Dangerous .

As an example, every ship except T3 cruisers is only a 1024x1024 bitmap. All of the effects have been redone in recent years to make them as efficient as possible to render, as well.
The real beauty of EVE Online is that it looks so good with how cheap the visuals are rendering-wise.
