I think you should have the option to allow or not gunners.
For example, it would be automatically on, but can be turned off by clicking on the L3 button and spinning it to where the lock would be. Pretty much like battle orders, but on the left stick that we don't use.

Chuckles is right, honestly. Hell, you'll still find people who will yell at you for playing the game the wrong way if they see you in a vehicle.
Just a few months back I called in a Python to try and help my team turn a match around only to have a Bluedot see the RDV coming in and drive his LAV all the way back into the redline to ram it before I could get in it, and then he jumped out and emptied his AR into me to emphasize his displeasure before driving back out to go run people over with his LAV.

You know. That reminds me of vehicle locks from planetside 2. You vehicle would be represented by a icon in your HUD,health, passengers and distance. There would be a timer on the vehicle. For the duration of that timer no would be allowed to drive your vehicle, only enter passenger and gunner seats.
But what dust needs,is a simple is a simple thirty second or minute timer. Enough time to crap out a link then get back in. This should have been in the game for ages.

the vehicle lock is being abused in planetside 2. the sunderer which is supposed to transport teammates to the next base, is often being driven solo and they refuse to pick up passengers or let them in even when they have room. i do not mind the vehicle lock on the other vehicles but the sunderer needs to transport folks. if i see a locked sundererer that only has one or two dudes, i blow it up.

Probaly was rolling with a platoon? I don't get locked out of sunderers much, but that's only because the entirety of the vanu is on the warpath. And besides. As an engineer who actually knows how to handle vehicles,im pretty welcome almost anywhere.

Actual functioning vehicle locks might be difficult to implement. Would probably have lots of bugs. Instead of coding new gameplay UI, keybinding, and all the other little things that could go wrong, we could take some of Planetside 2's system and adjust it accordingly:
-Only the owner of the vehicle can enter the driver's seat -Squadmates can switch to the drivers seat, but won't start out in it upon entering the vehicle if it's empty
Having L3 being the "eject all passengers" button would be cool if the dev team can do it without breaking something. It would make hotdrops well timed since the pilot is the most environmentally aware. As a downside, it would also cause a lot of hilarious trolling by dropping blues far into the redline. Or just irresponsibly dropping people into an enemy crowd.
Lastly I would appreciate the non-squad member enter timer being reduced 15 -> 10 seconds. Sometimes I actually want to transport blues at the start of the match, and they lose their patience as we both sit there doing nothing.

Vehicle locks were first requested back in closed beta.
Fast forward 2 years roughly and we finally got the ghetto vehicle entrance timer.
Now well over a year after that we still have the band aid in place with absolutely no change in sight.
TL;DR Don't waste your breath. Best case scenario based on past results is we will get a half fix in another year or so.

i lost an incy same as the op. i raged for a few mins then accepted it was my fault.
sargent sozu has good ideas but... we can only use the mechanics we have available atm, and if we take risks with strangers **** happens. but if we dont we may miss out also. its one of the few trust based things in a match. i kinda like it.

nah, he wasn't rolling with a platoon. dude was just solo. i do not see it often, but sometimes you will find a sunderer that is locked and it just one or two dudes by themselves with no platoon. i usually roll my own sundy, folks are free to jump in and out of it at will.
