Ripley Riley wrote:Judging by CCP Rouge's desire to have a New Eden FPS on PC, I would say that if a port were to happen it would at least be on PC. The question is really whether or not it will also be for PS4. Several other F2P games pull off multi-platform communities by separating the platforms into their own "shards".
Some players have pointed out how this would remove one of the things that made DUST 514 special compared to other MMOFPS games: a single shard game connected to Eve Online via PC and FW. They aren't completely wrong, but if the options are:
1.) Keep Dust unique, but lose the console players or 2.) Allow the Eve link to weaken, but include the console players who helped build this game
I will choose 2 every time.
If Valkyrie and Gunjack taught us anything it's that CCP is no longer afraid of creating games that exist in the New Eden universe but do not directly effect Eve Online. I think they plan on making the Eve link a tertiary "nice to have" feature now. Their goal would instead be to have a large playerbase to enjoy their game; a PC/PS4 port would accomplish that. The issue is that it's not a matter of weakening the EVE link.
The game depends fully on everyone in it interacting with everyone else with no borders or barriers.
As an example, what happens if you've been steadily expanding your low-sec empire on PS4, but the next constellation is inhabited by PC players that you can't fight? Suddenly your advance is halted by an arbitrary game mechanic.
I'm pretty sure players on both sides would find that frustrating and demoralizing.
There ARE ways to make a multi-platform FPS work for both groups of players, but I'm somewhat leery of how said groups would respond to their implementation. As an example, if Dust 514 on PC had rotation restrictions based on suit the same as the console version does, it would do a lot to level the playing field. The only issue would be that most PC players who play shooters haven't ever experienced a shooter that doesn't allow raw mouse input, and a large fraction of them would be instantly put off.
Also, I will reiterate my belief that with what I have stated above being the case, that the game should stay on PSN in order to support the current community instead of trying to ditch it in the hopes of building another one.

Ripley Riley wrote:You are making the assumption that current PC mechanics would follow us to a port. For all we know the PC system would be scrapped due to the reasons you mentioned. Being able to capture and own territory is a fundamental feature of New Eden as a whole. If you remove that entirely, you'd take with it one of the motivations for playing the game in the first place.
If you rebuild a new system, how do you account for the player split?

Look, the truth is I WANT multi-platform Dust. I've always wanted the game on both platforms.
I've never tried to support that, though, because of how deep this stupid PC vs Console conflict goes. I mean, we here manage to discuss it fairly reasonably most of the time, but it's not hard to find other places on the internet where people really go at each other.
Issues of control discrepancies can be addressed, but I don't know what can possibly be done about the fact that a formidable chunk of gamers would dismiss Dust 514 without even trying it if they saw that both sides of the "platform war" were able to play it.
I agree with what Ripley told me on Skype, that Dust has a pretty crazy way of bringing people together. I'm just not sure if that would be enough to get people to try it instead of sticking to their guns on the stupid "war".

I'm just not sure if that would be enough to get people to try it instead of sticking to their guns on the stupid "war". are you for real?! your saying less ppl would play it because it's NOT exclusive? thats crazy... who wouldn't play a game because someone else can? You would be both surprised and disappointed. I can't even list the number of people I've met who believe so hard in PC MASTER RACE that they actively celebrate games not releasing on console because it adds to their sense of superiority.
I've also talked to many people who currently play Dust who don't want it polluted by "******* PC gamers".
I know that with enough time and enough people enjoying themselves in the game and telling their friends about it, Dust could grow to have the kind of enormous population CCP wanted if it went multi-platform. However, I worry as to whether it would get that time in a market where new titles are always coming out and major franchises still hold a lot of player loyalty.
