I'm a rank 1 (Private i think), I've been playing for about 3 months now. I always have trouble finding battles, with or without a squad. It would sometimes take me 5 mins to find a battle, but most of the time even if I wait 10-12mins I wouldn't be able to find one, to the point where scotty would return an error.
My question is what are the factors to finding a battle? Is internet speed/latency a factor? or rank?
The reason I ask is today I experienced something frustrating. I decided to form a 4 man squad with the title "noobs only" to attract players of the same level so i don't get stomped by protos while playing. The squad was full and I've been searching for a battle for about 3mins. At that point I asked if one of the squad members would like to try their luck in finding a battle, and one volunteered. As soon as I handed him leadership, he found a battle. Must have taken him 2 or 3 seconds (he was a rank 2. private first class i think). This happened again with other players within the same squad.
So how come I couldn't find a battle for the longest time but other players could?

So how come I couldn't find a battle for the longest time but other players could? Hmm... that's odd. There is a hidden attribute that the matchmaker uses to determine who you play with and against. When you are in a squad, it should take into consideration the entire squad... I'm not sure.
I can say that internet speed/latency and character ranks are not factors that the matchmaker uses to determines what match you get put in.
What battle choices have you selected? What server option are you using? (To check the server selection, go to your Neocom [Main Menu], select System Operation -> Option. Use L2/R2 to switch the tab to Gameplay Settings and check the Battle Server Region. Try setting it to Automatic if it hasn't.)

Hello to both of you, Newberry and Pruneberry (Yes, I'm teasing you Kaze---you are one of the Advanced Players in this game, that it Dust must have made you wise and wrinkled by now. like Yoda).
Kaze, I have tried that same trick with my squads from time to time, and I can confirm it DOES work just as Anibus observed. If I'm stuck getting a long "searching for battles" dialogue, or a "cannot enter battle already started" glitch, I can address it by promoting one of my squad to Leader, and let HIM initiate a battle for us. It does work. Why, we don't know. "Leader" does seem to have a small influence on the battle-finder sequence.
But as a Newberry, Anibus, don't get frustrated. "Matchmaking" is NOT doing exactly what we may think it's doing during the decision process. And to keep players from trying to exploit it, CCP has kept wisely quiet about WHAT the matchmaker is actually analyzing and comparing when it's trying to fit 30 players into the next battle.
There are some factors that influence your battle-searching process, but they are factors OUTSIDE your control:
The players in your timezone flock to Domination matches more than FW or Ambush, so getting matched up in a Dom match will take 20 seconds.... while finding 30 good matches to do an Ambush may take 5 minutes sometimes. Jeezz.
The time of the day or week you play leaves you in a pool where most of the players are "matchable" based on one kind of player-profile, but very few players can be found to match YOUR player-profile (which MAY explain why Kaze may get a battle-location in 30 seconds,... but then have to wait a whole 2 minutes for the "waiting for deployment" message to end, while the matchmaker finds a match for Celesta to be added to the battle too).
These are both just theories.... theories is virtually all we players really have, because like I said, it's smart of CCP to hide the Matchmaker's design from us as much as possible.
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...

Following up on what Celesta said, there are many theories about how matchmaker works, but nobody really knows how it works.
If you are still having problems with it, try sending a support ticket in talking about the problem and seeing if there's something up with your character.

Thank you both for the replies!
Well it seems like an unfortunate problem people have to face then. I like to play pub games and I have unselected skirmish only. and I also have the battle server region set to automatic.
And yes I agree Celesta, it is wise to keep the matchmaking process a secret as it might be open to abuse by other players.
Anyway thank you again!

Always reset your battle search if it goes past 4 minutes. That should help, aswell as being on the Automatic server.
