As some of you may have heard, players are attempting to organize a boycott of DUST* this Saturday (November 14th).
Whether or not this boycott will do anything of value is being debated. In the spirit of good record keeping, I am posting the Eve Offline average concurrent logins to see if this "strike" actually causes a change. Please keep in mind that Fallout 4 has released this week; we should expect to see a dip in concurrent logins this weekend anyway. We are looking for a significant change. The organizers of the boycott claim to have thousands of players participating so we should see these numbers plummet into the triple digits.
As of July 7, Warlords 1.2 release 1 yr: 2333 6 mo: 2072 3 mo: 1936 1 mo: 1921 1 wk: 1966
As of September 25, Amarr Challenge Event end 1 yr: 2162 6 mo: 2025 3 mo: 2081 1 mo: 1992 1 wk: 2066
As of November 11 1 yr: 2092 6 mo: 1985 3 mo: 1945 1 mo: 1829 1 wk: 1732
*: While the movement has been called a strike, this is inaccurate. A strike is "a refusal to work organized by a body of employees as a form of protest, typically in an attempt to gain a concession or concessions from their employer." CCP does not employee players. We voluntarily play this game and can quit at any time.

Dreis ShadowWeaver wrote:You can rest assured though that we will indeed see a dip in player count on the 14th of November. Well yes, of course you will. People will be avoiding radroaches in Fallout 4 all weekend I know some guys who are taking Friday off work so they can play for three days straight.
We should see a large change to the numbers, 25% drop or more, if the boycott was effective.

Way to help the cause. You what? Ask yourself how it looks when the console community actively boycotts your game. It would make many developers believe the community is too toxic to maintain. They would look elsewhere for a new community: PC. The Eve players are already singing DUST's praises... don't give CCP a reason to wave the PS4 port off due to a boycotting of the game.

Dreis ShadowWeaver wrote:I am confused by what these numbers actually represent. What do you mean '1 yr as of July 7'? Are you talking about July 7th 2014? These numbers represent the 1 year, 6 month, 3 month, 1 month, and 1 week average concurrent logins found here: http://eve-offline.net/?server=dust
I track them when I have a free moment to record DUST 514's "health" day to day.

But this event?
BELOW 3000?????? ... there wasn't an event this weekend... Wtf are you talking about? There is an event scheduled for the end of November... is that what you are thinking of?
Tech Ohm Eaven wrote:But the real strike is comeing on Black Friday at 299 for a PS4 with games. So I expect some to run to Hussle-Stop to trade in a PS3 to buy a PS4. Cause other than dust 514 what else is there to play in 2016 on PS3? Another PS3 Barbies Sisters Puppy Rescue? Most Game Developers are saying no content for old gen in 2016 and beyond. You act like I don't realize PS3 is a console in it's twilight...

Aeon Amadi wrote:Unfortunately, even with their reach being in the thousands, one critical factor that everyone seems to have forgot is that PCU =/= Unique Logins. There is no way for the Dust 514 community to view unique logins and thus the only metric to go off of is the active players online at any given time.
So, if the boycott (or strike or whatever you wanna call it) did have an effect, you probably wouldn't see it in the PCU anyway. Because we could have 1,000,000,000 "active players" (unique logins) but they could only be on for, say, long enough to get their daily login reward and their warbarge stuff.
With 2,500 - 3,000 players online, the community instantly thinks the numbers are low, that "Dust is dying", etc. In reality, there are hundreds of thousands of players that get on at various points throughout the day for varying duration.
The community's "activity" is nebulous and hard to put into words. The PCU is only a fragment of the information needed to classify what degree of activity the community has. All valid points, but if hundreds of players had boycotted then the peak concurrent logins would have at least dipped a little. The numbers I pulled show they didn't change at all.

Doing something is not the same as doing the right thing. The boycott was a well meaning, but useless. It doesn't open up communication when players boycott, it closes it.
Paint yourself as martyrs or crusaders if it makes you feel good though. By all means.

Dreis ShadowWeaver wrote:So, uh, I haven't check the forums or played DUST since before the strike. Did it amount to anything, or did it embarrassingly flop...? In terms of concurrent logins, the peak numbers were unchanged. The week concurrent averages were slightly higher than before the boycott..
"Did it amount to anything"? If the goal was to get CCP to speak to us about the future of DUST 514 then the boycott doesn't appear to have been successful.

You guys won. You broke my spirit.
Dismounts off cross Hey, I didn't want to break anyone's spirit. I know why you attempted to boycott and I know where you are coming from. We're all frustrated with CCP's lack of communication. Believe it or not, I even thought about boycotting at one point.
Don't give up. Just find ways of actively requesting communication that are not an "attack". If the #PortDust514 campaign works for you, then do it. If not, reach out to gaming media and talk about the lack of communication from CCP.
Oh, and making a statement with your wallet is recommended. Like most businesses, CCP pays the most attention to their bottom line. When CCP does good (speaks to us regarding the future of DUST 514) purchase aurum. When they do bad (silence) don't purchase anything. Eventually they will learn that if they want money they must open their mouths. Either that, or they shut down DUST 514 permanently. Either way, we don't have to deal with DUST on the PS3 anymore so we win!
