Hopefully people here won't go the silly route of getting into politics over the post. Note that my disagreement with your assumption is based solely off of DUST rather than any real world political issue.
1. The difference between those two events is the scale. DUST average numbers for the past 3 months have been 1,890 players with the peak logon never hitting 3,000 users in that time frame.10 million is a hell of a lot larger than DUST numbers.
2. Not playing DUST is in no where the same as someone not going to work or refusing to buy anything. CCP earns money through DUST by people spending it on Aurum, not by playing the game.
3. One population has been steadily increasing over the last several years. The other has been decreasing pretty much from the very beginning.
The only kind of strike that could do be worthwhile is to have everyone who has monetized the game make a statement: "I am no longer supporting the development of DUST by purchasing Aurum, Respecs, or other micro-transactions. I have done so in the past and will continue to do so under these conditions: A) A new product that amounts to 'DUST 514 on X platform, B) An announcement of how things will transition to a new port, or C) CCP expands DUST heavily and informs the playerbase on the plans for the game. If any of these conditions are met, I will begin to monetize your products again. Until than, I abstain from any transaction."
You would also need to be believable enough that you would actually begin to spend money again. Even that has a chance to back fire: "Well, I guess people don't care about the game anymore; let's call it. Not worth transitioning a game with few players if they aren't actually paying."
The entire idea of "A Day Without a MERC-ican" is flawed. It is nearly slacktivism, though I do think it has higher chance of doing something rather than just 'liking a YouTube video' though not much more. It will make people feel better for "sending a message to CCP" but the message of "we want a port!" is already known by CCP, they just are not saying if they are following through for whatever reason. Many, many people are not playing DUST 514 at all; 1,000 people not playing for a single day isn't going to change much.
"This is B.S! This is B.S! I paid money! Cash money, dollars money, cash money!"
