I managed to get the gallente assault skill to 5 so that I could use the dispersion bonus to test the ion pistol.
The weapons short range mostly crippled my ability to fire charge shots behind cover. The enemy is far to close to use cover objects usually. The charge shot seemed to be mostly crippling in most situations because I can swap to other weapons and kill the target more reliably. (if the time to fully charge was reduced then the ion pistol would be a much better weapon, see suggestions below)
The ion pistol has very bad range and its damage is limited by player controlled rate of fire (I can only get an average ROF of 450 sometimes). Thus increasing the ROF is pointless for me with this weapon. I seem to have no trouble with other semi auto weapons.
Its base DPS for body shots is ok but the small range really limits the guns functionality. (I think changing the weapon in other ways before changing its range its the best approach)
The gun shakes alot while charging and when fully charged (while aiming down sights). This cripples the guns functionality alot. The weapon should be changed so it does not shake when charging and when fully charged (while aiming down sights).
The weapon should have its clipsize increased more by roughly 15 bullets more. The gun punishes players for missing shots far too greatly. The current clipsize makes it very hard to kill armor tanked opponents by itself without charging the weapon. OR The headshot multiplier could be increased by roughly 120% more, instead of increasing the clipsize, if this suggestion is seen as a smaller performance increase by others.
You could reduce the time it takes to charge the weapon down to 0.7 seconds and reduce the amount of heat generated for shots that are charged at 90% down to 0% charge (probably an exponential equation is needed within programming that converges to a constant very quickly as the charge amount decreases to 0%). Change the equation that determines the amount of heat generated based on charge percentage for every shot. This would make the gun an excellent finisher. The suggestion to change the heat generation equation formula, above might need a client update. But you can still reduce the heat generated per shot.
Reducing the overheat seize duration by 0.8 seconds would be great for all the ion pistols (officer weapon included) |

The ion pistol is my they're coming outta the god damned walls gun. For close quarters there's nothing better for a sidearm in my opinion. At max skill a charge shot from the advanced I usually run will just about one shot a fully tanked advanced galass. It'll definitely drop any scout provided they don't get a shot off first.
And for everyone else it's spam R1 like a madman because it'll chew through just about anything. |

I stopped reading this after a few sentences. Dude. You have not spent enough time with this thing. This thing is like my bests friends. It always outperforms others weapons when it's time to pull it out. Charge shots are amazing on it. You can kill so quickly with it. Dude, you need to spend much more time with it. It is an amazing sidearm.

I also find it hard to believe you did not one shot head shot them because in all cases every headshot I have gotten against even full health proto caldari and minmatar assaults (okay maybe gal and amarr can survive because brick tank) ave gone down.

It does have the ability to one shot suits that aren't tanked or have very little tank, but any suit that has more than 500ish HP will survive.
I'm not denying its ability to kill things, if you get a sweet, sweet headshot most things will die or get seriously hurt. However, in almost all situations, the SMG is just better, you don't have to deal with random overheat, shots not registering or flying sideways. I love the gun but it just isn't that good.

Scrambler pistol works a lot better at range. I choose scrambler pistol over ion pistol even though I used mostly gallente gear. The ion pistol was just too gimmicky. You can only charge the ion pistol up to 1/4 of the bar or it overheats. The range was a little low even for cqc,since I engaged targets at 20m as my cqc preference.mainly because that's the assault rifles secondary strength. Aiming down sight and staying on target with a duvolle was pretty lethal to even the most brick tanked armour suits.
