I keep seeing and participating in dust port threads. The big problem is that if we port dust, we lose ps3 gamers in the process for various reasons.
My proposed solution is to keep dust 514 going indefinitely on ps3 while making a sister fps, based on the same principles on new systems.
The new fps integrates with eve better, if it is on pc, perhaps it even launches from the eve client. It still follows the ftp model. This new fps expands beyond the current dust, allowing battles in citadels to disable services, battle on planets to impact sovereignty, while dust keeps its factional warfare impact.
So we would end up with two EVE: FPS based on dust, the ps3 players can continue playing dust 514, and the next Gen and pc players move to the sister fps.

No need for that. Many games have continued on with new versions while the previous console's version still remains.
Just keep the service going on the ps3. It eill be some time before DUST will move on. By that time the ps3 version won't really need further updating and can be considered retirable just like the ps3.

I'd prefer it if CCP stopped caring about a dying console with a dying game with a dying playerbase that is infinitesimal in size. CCP needs to get mtherfcking cold.
And to the playerbase: sing along, chumps.

The answer to maintain relevancy for the PS3 is simply to allow the ported version to influence systems other than Molden Heath.

I like this idea but I would like to be able to transfer my Dust514 character to this new FPS game. |

There is no way in hell that the cost of keeping DUST running for "the PS3 guys" would be worth it. The game because even more fatalistic than it already is; "why play when there is just the better version?" That and how many people would stick around on PS3 if there was a port? The amount of people you are 'keeping' isn't worth the cost of keeping the ship running.
The big part is that your proposal completely removes the biggest hope and demand that people have with a possible DUST port; keeping the crap that we have bought. CCP has been selling quite a lot of skins, they did that whole blunder FanFest14 about how "everything relevant would transfer", and have not said otherwise sense than. With the two different games, it could be said "oh, this is just a different game so nothing transfers." It gets around the nasty business of selling things for a game that is supposed to live on in a different medium without actually having to do that.
When people say "port DUST", the don't mean "remake the game and let's start over." They want to have their character names, SP, corporations, and some people even expect to keep their ISK. Having "DUST 514" and "DUST 625" would mean not getting to keep your stuff.
There is only one way that this entire fustercluck of a situation goes over smoothly: CCP pulls a War Thunder. "Play on PS4 or PC; keep your same characters."

Yeah. If Dust ever became anything special I would play it on the PC if I had to.

The people who would keep playing a PS3 DUST are the same people who would not be able to afford paying Aurum.
As you can see, this won't work out.

'Port' for me means rewriting the product from the ground up. CCP produced such an unworkable piece of kittenpoop that it is fundamentally not worth developing any further.
CCP has committed to some form of asset/skill transfer, but a rewrite is a path fraught with danger - imagine CCP working behind closed doors with the still-undersized balance of the Shanghai devteam, re-making all the design decisions made for Dust. Anything could come out of that - some of the noises Rouge's design team were making after the wedding were pretty terrifying.
Dust's crappy implementation aside, it did get the vision of 'New Eden on the ground' somewhat right - that's why Dust is more meaningful than other shooters and why many of us continue to play/follow the game.
Imo the best course of action would be to rewrite the product that we have, put it on a solid, extensible codebase that encourages and supports future development, and then proceed to develop iteratively in dialog with the community. The best platform for dialog, collaboration & development is PC, the desire for many of us to go to PS4(best player experience) notwithstanding.
The core design principles of a rewrite should be:
- Quality.
- Professional Standards(Remember Metacritic)
- Extensibility/flexibility of codebase & systems
- Pre-integration with EVE. Assume we will have full integration and write Dust2 to be plug and play with market, contracts, squads, comms, etc.
- Honor New Eden: Everything costs ISK or AUR(E.g. EVE BPOs are ok, but no magic Dust BPOs), risk/reward, personal responsibility, depth and rich interaction of game systems, persistence, meaning.
Other than that we should not overly-constrain the game design, other than to say that community input would be a valuable tool and save many wasted dev-years ;) - a lesson too late for Dust, but perhaps not for Dust2.
