Whether you are a new player, a poor player, or simply trying to force yourself to play better, trying to kill Proto geared players while you are fitted in Militia and Standard gear is a challenge. If you go head to head with an equally skilled player who is in better gear you are going to lose. So avoid going head to head with Proto players.
There is a saying in New Eden which goes something like this: GÇ£If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you are doing it wrong.GÇ¥ If you are waring Militia or Standard gear and are up against Proto players, you best remember this.
You need to even the odds:
1) If you have the player skill to pull it off, aim for the head. The head shot bonus is larger than the gear difference. This only works if you can actually hit such a small target though.
2) Attack from behind. By the time they have managed to turn around, you should have done enough damage to make up for the gear difference.
3) Work in a team if you can. Two or three militia players working together will mow down lone wolf proto stompers, and will at least have a better chance against Proto squads. If you are playing alone, stay close to other Blues, so there is a chance that someone else will also be shooting at your target. If you have a Proto after you, running through a squad of Blues is a good way to loose/distract him.
4) Use cover to gain the initiative. When you are using cover your enemy does not know exactly when you are going to step out and start shooting, so it will usually take them a moment to react. You should be able to do some damage before they respond, and then duck back behind cover before they have done any serious damage to you. Do this repeatedly and you will be doing a lot more damage than they are. Be prepared to retreat though. They may try to rush in and turn it into a head to head fight, and you don't want that. Also, if you step out and take damage immediately, then they are laying in wait for you with their sights already lined up. If that is the case, retreat and find some other cover to engage them from.
5) Finally, wait for opportunities. If you see an enemy, but you donGÇÖt think you can take them, then donGÇÖt engage. If they donGÇÖt know you are there, donGÇÖt tell them were you are by shooting at them when you know you are not going to be able to kill them. Wait until they are distracted, or try to hack, or someone else is shooting at them. Wait for an opportunity.
I will close with two final observations: - If you can be a good player in Militia gear, you are going to be deadly in Proto. - A better player will likely kill you regardless of what gear they are warring. Gear is only one part of the equation.
