Well,... no, not quite what we often believe. Eve Dust 514 is not a "title" (a game you work till you've unlocked everything, and then you put it down). It's an RPG about accumulating character wealth over time,... and that's the only kind of player who gets in the game, and STAYS in the game off and on for years. In the meantime, this game is cleverly disguised as a "shooter", and like Destiny, and Halo, and BF15, etc, the shooter-population will get in it, play it for as long as it takes to get really agile with it, and get out. ...If you're a "shooter", that's what you do, LOL!
Currently, the game is populated with one of these TWO groups, so a chunk of us will be staying, and the "member count" rises or falls based solely on how quickly the "shooter chunk" cycles itself in and out.
Dust's "player count", "member count", (whatever you want to call it, and whatever that number in the lower righhand corner actually IS),... used to be influenced by a THIRD kind of player, a player type that seemed exclusive to Eve-Online and Dust 514: the severely challenged player.
Back when Dust was what a fellow player called "super-BRUTAL", you tried this game, the SHOCK effect was immense! You ran into trouble learning the map and features solely because your merc was being murdered just for walking every 6 yards! Each time you died, the game showed no sympathy, no helpful explanation, not even exit-music to accompany the ambulance. Just a "push this button to start the match" attitude----that was equal to being laughed at. You just couldn't believe anyone would make a game that beats you up so ruthlessly just for trying to play a match. How dare a game treat me like I'm a mutt! What nerve! I will NOT let that happen--I'm gonna keep pushing this game until I get my death-rate from 312 down to 299---that's my goal ( !!!) So the severely-challenged player's motivation was super-high!!
But with the game now softened to permit "a less adversarial" player experience, that kind of player doesn't exist enough to influence and raise the member-count anymore. I know that kind of player well, because I was one of them, LOL. I must admit, my motivation for staying in this game was that I wouldn't accept a game humiliating me. (My sweetie gave in to the constant beating, and surrendered and left me in this on my own... that's okay, he's still my sweetie). If the game had been easier to get comfortable in, many of us who love it and play it now would have left out of boredom too. "Shooter-players" play till they get really agile with it, and then they leave.
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...
No story can have life without writers and publishers.
