That's because all DUST players are based in extremely low pop high sec systems where generally the only EVE pilots speaking fall into two camps: Scam spammers, and odd industrialists living on their tiny island of mining and blueprint chomping, speaking to the void.
The major trade hubs and surrounding systems are where the scams actually are in full swing, with bogus trade contracts, ISK doublers, and others touting their wares 24/7. I've known quite a few pilots that made their first few billion on some of the more prevalent pyramid schemes in the game such as the bogus Wallet sites and others. But in general this is a small minority of EVE pilots, and it's not a highly regarded activity in the community. It's just sort of background noise, and the vast majority of players know better than to fall for the simple stuff.
Where EVE gets its reputation for scamming for real is the whale hunters. Let's say you have a credit card warrior who just bought $1,000 worth of space bling, but has zero experience in the game.
A common ploy is to pose as a "recruiter" for Goonswarm. Even the greenest of Amex Apex idiots has heard of Mittens and his exploits. They'll bubble and froth over his pimped out pod & ships, assuring him profusely that he'd be a great asset to the house of Bees. First order of business is to pay your initial Corp entry fees. That'll be 800mil ISK. ( Chump change in EVE ). We need to know that you're serious about Goonswarm. Wallet dinged, good deal.
But security is a problem right now getting to our nullsec base, and we wouldn't want you to loose that shiny shiny pod flying out there once reds see a new Goonswarm loyal brosef. So he're what we'll do. We have a jump freighter pilot in station ready to move your assets, and we'll keep you in your NPC corp to make the trip in a shuttle. Just trade everything over to Sam the Fixer here, and we'll trade it back to you once you've docked up in our staging system. Oh, and we'll need another 500mil to cover his fuel costs and time spent. ISK transferred? Puurrrfect.
Okay, now just hand him everything you'll need to rat and PvP once you reach staging. Trade finished? Everything to Sam? Oh, I have to take care of something IRL real quick, I'll be back in just a few... *permanent radio silence*
Boom, several hundred dollars worth of ships & ISK down the tubes, and the "recruiter" never to be heard from again.
That's EVE hustling, and there are plenty of trillion ISK stories out there to the same tune from the long con guys. Here's just one:

Fascinating reading.
EVE scams are on a level only dreamed of by DUST scammers, is my only point. But they're profitable and can be the result of personal / political vendettas. They move player plot forward, and that is what EVE is about much much much more so than DUST. |
