...but before you start grabbing your pitch forks and starting a witch hunt against me for saying this, hear me out.
As some of you have noticed, I have been playing Splatoon on the WiiU for quite some time. The only reason I'm not playing Dust 514 right now is because my PS3 is acting up and I'm no longer certain about its longevity. I'm afraid that any attempt to get Dust working again will cause my PS3 to brick.
Anyways, in Splatoon there is feature called "Rank Battles" which rotates between three different gameplay modes which are Rainmaker, Splat Zones, and Tower Control every few hours with only 2 maps to play in per rotation.
During ranked battles, you wait in the lobby for the roster of 8 players to fill up before the battle can start. You can see the roster as you wait. The players who join are usually within your rank bracket. Once the roster is full, the teambuilder then takes those 8 players and randomly assigns them to two opposing teams of four players each.
Once the battle starts, it lasts for 3 minutes or until one side succeeds in overwhelming the other which leads to knockout.
Winners gain points towards their next rank. Losers lose points from their rank. If you lose enough points, you get demoted from... say... B- Rank to C+ Rank. It goes like this...
S+ S S- A+ A A- B+ ... Down to C- which is the lowest rank. It takes 100 points to reach the next rank.
The higher your rank, the lower the rewards if you win a battle and the higher the punishment if you lose one. If you're at S rank, you're seeing minimal gains and monumental losses.
Seems crazy, right? You're probably asking yourself "who the frakk would play under these extremely unfair conditions? Holy crap, and I thought Dust was unfair."
But that's not all. If you disconnect at all from the match, it doesn't matter if it is intentional or by accident, you will still be punished and likely suffer heavy point losses. I got demoted whole ranks because of unstable connections.
Freaked out by this yet? I was too.
But then I noticed something weird going on in the game. A lot of players still play Ranked Battles. Some have even reached S rank in no time under these conditions. Pure masochists I tell you because you will lose more ranked battles than you could possibly win no matter how hard you try. It took me a whole month to grind my way out of B rank and into B+. Sometimes I even teeter at the brink of being demoted and I pray to Odin to not get disconnected because the diminished returns for being in a higher rank are starting to become apparent.
But still, people keep playing ranked battles like it's their passion. I still can't convince myself to stop playing that mode even after suffering a 10-loss streak. I would say "I quit" out loud and then find myself playing again a few hours later. WTH
Oh, did I forget to mention that there is no "leave battle" option? Once you're in the ranked battle, you're there until the match is over. So even if you're clearly getting stomped by the opposing team, which to be honest is starting to look a whole lot like Dust's Domination mode, your choices are to either keep trying and get splatted over and over again with no success, idle at the spawn, or forcibly disconnect. Obviously you won't willfully disconnect because of the heavy penalty I mentioned earlier.
But still, people keep playing this mode in Splatoon.
So here we are in the Dust forums with people saying that "penalizing players who disconnect or leave is unfair and will see no one playing it". Meanwhile, we're seeing the exact opposite of what you think would happen if players were penalized like that. I don't see anyone leaving the match early, I see ALL players actively trying to contribute to the battle, and they somehow manage to get to A or S rank. It makes me wonder now what would happen if these penalties for leaving a battle were applied to Dust.

PS: Almost forgot to mention that I would only support this AFTER porting Dust to the next platform.

And does Splatoon have long, 15-20 minute matches?
(I don't think so, from what little I know of the game)
Because I think the two above factors that apply to DUST are what may aid in making things so... crappy.
In DUST, If you try when things are bleak, you often get punished: Get stomped on, and fight back, even with cheap gear? -> Congrats! Your ISK income is detrimentally affected! Get stomped on, and fight back or chill in the MCC? ------> Congrats! You get to have no fun for 15-20 minutes!
True, but the point I'm trying to make here is the gameplay. ISK now seems to be less and less of a factor especially when you consider the availability of Trade in Dust. We can trade BPOs, SKINs, Officer and Experimental gear, and now boosters.
For now, we are looking past that. We are talking about points here that goes towards or is taken away from a rank in a ranked battle. It's like losing a match in Factional Warfare and seeing the Minmatar take away your Points to the next rank for simply losing.
PS: Those 15-20 minutes would have been more enjoyable if Scotty weren't so drunk all the time in pub matches.

I'm all for a system like this, but I probably end up leaving close to 50% of pub matches when solo. That includes lopsided wins as well as losses. If I'm playing solo, it usually means I don't have much time. I don't want to spend my play time just waiting for the two or three crappy matches I'm deployed into to end.
Unfortunately I feel that this penalty system would only work best if CCP ever decides to #PortDust514.
