I believe we could extend Academy time for newcomers by making a battle Academy II.
When some one graduates battle Academy, instead of going straight to normal contacts, they advance to battle Academy II, which has higher wp levels than initial battle Academy - this allows the Mercs who have gotten the hang of the controls to practice and learn the game at with a better learning curve than being dropped from happy Academy into forever curbstomps.
Once the Mercs reach the thresholds for this mode, they advance to the final Academy, Academy III, Academy III has much raised wp ceilings, allowing the experienced rookies to vet themselves against each other to hone their skills.
The graduates will then move into the rookie league, no matter their mu score from the academies. They will spend a few matches there for evaluation, then the match maker will place then wherever it feels.

that road is too long
what needs to happen is separate newbies form experienced and good players then vets
newbies in academy then experienced and newbies mingle after that experienced and good players then experienced and vets
the way to do this is to have two academy levels and end game content
lets say there's 3 main levels academy available only to new players locked out after graduation pubs available to all fw/pc available late game with certain requirements
lets also say there is two versions for pubs, early game pubs and late game pubs this separates the two main groups vets and newbies with people in between being able to experience both
and leaving fw and pc as late game content for vets
that's how I think things should be anyway, although way more thought could be put in to make it more effective

You're completely overlooking the issues. Separating new players from vets would mean matchmaking times would double and matches might not even happen outside of prime time.
The problem isn't new players being pitted against older players. Much rather that new players have no ******* clue what they're doing. The lack of knowledge about current meta and even what every weapon/suit/module does is far bigger of a barrier compared to actually having the SP to take advantage of things.
You gain this knowledge not by playing matches against other people who have no clue but against people who know the meta or directly with other people who are more experienced.

We'd need some numbers on how many new players from each category are actually logging in and playing on a given day, but assuming those numbers are high enough I can see this doing great things for new player retention.
FWIW, the 'newborn player' number fluctuates between 3500 & 7000 per day.
Something is killing new player retention.

Our new players are disappearing somewhere. Did you know that over the last 3 months, the lowest daily newborn player number is higher than the highest daily login number? Check it out yourself: http://eve-offline.net/?server=dust
Any and all ideas that serve to improve new player retention should be considered. Especially those that propose a system where new players are given some space to find their feet and learn the game without being relentlessly stomped.
Something is killing new player retention.

New players need to learn about how vets gun game. Maybe corp ceo's can have a look at them in battle as observers and help give tips and tricks to better their game.

This system could be implemented without a client update! The battle Academy button could que the rookie into the correct Academy level based on his wp or kills.
Level one Academy is the same as today's. Academy II is up to 15k* warpoints Academy III is up to 40k* war points
*numbers are just placeholders, CCP has much better metrics

No, stop babysitting these motherfuckers. Keeping them in the academy longer against other players with little knowledge of the game or players that suck does nothing but build bad tendencies that work in that environment.
They're gonna get out of that and then crouch behind a rock when a Proto Assault is getting ready to smack them down with the wrath of god in regular contracts. That **** worked in the academy. Probably not gonna work in a contract with proto Gal scans.

Probably not gonna work in a contract with proto Gal scans. This system will deliver much better blue berries to the standard contracts. Those rookies need this, Imo.
You know what happens to those under prepared rookies when they get sent to normal contacts? They leave dust for good.
I had it easy when I started, everyone was on the same level, everyone sucked. But, we got good in a hurry, we were able to learn from each other as we progressed in skill and propped each other up, there wasn't a cliff because my peers all started at roughly the same time.
This proposal let's Newberrys find their feet and learn how to navigate dust's intricacies on their own terms. Being sent into the veteran league after two or three lucky Academy matches gurantees we lost that player forever.
I want players to stay, I want higher quality rookies. We get that by letting them graduate through a tiered Academy.
At first, the rookie trickle may slow down, but then it will speed up and up as they enjoy dust, get hooked on dust, play hard on dust, get good at dust, and, finally, join the veteran league as a pro player and not cannon fodder

If the goal is simply to keep more people playing then this would probably be good. But I must say as a relatively new player that I think I have grown a lot by playing against better people. Sure I was getting killed a ton in the beginning but I was persistent and leaned. And now I can say I am happy for all those early struggles because I got where I am now much quicker than I would have in a system playing against other lesser players.
So, I think with the proposed system we may have more people sticking around but it will take them a lot longer to reach decent skill levels. |

So, I think with the proposed system we may have more people sticking around but it will take them a lot longer to reach decent skill levels. You represent the exception, most rookies quit after the first stomp.
The proposal takes the steep cliff that we lob rookies off and makes a nice escalator. It's slower than lobbing them to their doom, but they use that time to get good and ready for the mightiest mercenaries in the universe waiting at the bottom.
This tiered Academy pitches the rookies against progressively more difficult opponents, allowing them time to learn, adapt and develop the skills and tools to engage the veterans later.

But, most won't, which is why I'm advocating for the tiered battle Academy, to give the rookies enough time to find and discover dust 514's 'secrets'.
