What I mean is, let's get rid of some of the variations on rifles.
Why would you have a burst AR when you already have a fully automatic? It overlaps with the CR too much.
The AR is like an M-16 so, you can have the tac and burst.
The CR is like an AK-47 so, fully auto and single shot is perfect as is.
The assault RR defeats the purpose of the weapon and balance of the game in relation to other rifles. The ARR is so great at CQ why have the AR?
I like the idea that Caldari would go sidearm for CQ and then let the ARR be more of a tac rifle single shot vs. the full auto RR.
That sound like overlap? Well, the RR is different enough for what it is that a tac version is different enough from the tac AR. Also, it can be different enough from the sniper rifle in that it fires quicker with quicker charge and of course less range and damage. The sniper rifle could then be made to fire and reload slower to justify upping the damage factor and let the sniper rifle be more of a sniper rifle.
Anyway, just concepting. Discuss. I agree that there is too much overlap. But my version of it is a bit different, particularly with the ARR/RR/AR/BAR. You're saying that the ARR is good for short range so why have the AR? And I imagine the same argument goes for the RR and BAR?
The difference is about the technologies involved.
The base Caldari hybrid weapon is the railgun. In Dust that translates to the railrifle. It's about long range, not particularly high damage. It's for being able to hit at ranges that nothing else can. By the way a sniper rifle is a rail gun, which is my point.
The base Gallente hybrid weapon is the blaster. In Dust that translates to the assault rifle. It's for close encounters, and is a devastating weapon when it hits, but it hasn't really that much range, certainly nothing like the RR, but it's much more dangerous at close range than the RR.
The RR is a long range, slow fire weapon. It's no that great for close range for a number of reasons, the main one for me being the charge time. I'm often dead before my RR has even charged to fire the first shot. For closer encounters, the Caldari need an assault variant, hence the ARR, which is a faster firing version that lets Caldari use RR skills in close encounters.
The AR is by definition an assault close encounter weapon. But without the range, it's not very useful in ranged encounters, hence the Gallente need a long range variant, hence the breach assault rifle, which is a slower fire, longer range weapon. It still can't outrange a rail rifle but it certainly can mix it with an assault RR.
So the only real overlap is the ARR and the BAR. Yes, they do much the same thing at much the same (mid) range. The RR is for long range, and the AR is for very short range. We need all of these rifles, because the training that is required for them is different. A BAR is an assault rifle, a Gallente weapon, where an ARR is a rail rifle, a Caldari weapon.
For people who train anything at all because it's supposedly "better", it probably doesn't make much difference which race it came from. For people who train racially, it would be a problem. Denying the Gallente either their AR or the breach variant on the basis that there is a Caldari weapon that supposedly does the same thing, would not be reasonable. |
