One of the things I like most about Eve-Dust 514, is it intricacy. In any other fps, if anyone asked me how I got my HK4 Shotgun to be so powerful against the tanked-heavy enemy player near the corner of that building, the answer would be easy..."I unlocked 3 damage boosters during the aircraft-hanger mission!" But if anyone asked me how my HK4 Shotgun got that powerful in DUST,...jeez, the explanation would take 13 paragraphs and 2 flow charts, in order to account for all the relevant tweaks we perform to make a weapon great.
Such a cool game!
But, even though your Installations redesign is a coo idea (VERY cool), I'm always concerned about WHERE the game is allowed to become more intricate. My mind always tells me, the devs were smart in making this game an "infantry" game.... and I've seen many of the decisions the devs made over the past 2 years that seemed to have a definite "infantry-first" prejudice to them.
We were asking for Dropships to become airial platforms that passengers could shoot forge-guns and swarmers from---they turned it down.
We wanted (still beg for) the racial sub-orbital fighter craft to be added to the game---they seemed to reverse the plan for that.
We ask for merc assaults to be taken up into the enemy MCC and into the enemy warbarges, and into Capsuleers' spaceships---they fully ignored the request.
And I LIKE that they turned these ideas down. A little prejudice can be good. They're all cool ideas, but they'll add complexity to the game that will compete with "infantry-first" gameplay more than help infantry gameplay.
The core concept of "Installations" is that they would be moderate-AI, moderate-cost war pieces that aren't good enough to protect a Capsuleer's processing facility by themselves, but that the Capsuleer will still be wise to invest ISK in, because they might provide enough point-defense or fire-support to save him from buying, maybe, err... 2 clone packs (hopefully?). Heck, just deciding to purchase x-number of them is a gamble for the Capsuleer---the mercs who are hotshots at their job may not even call one down to help them during their assault, and the "Blaster-version" they call down may be a version that's only good for the 15 seconds of a quick firefight, before the firefight now requires the "C-version Blaster".
If our current Installations get the final tweaks to make them a bit more dangerous, that will be intricate enough for me. They are only Installations, and I think simple, general design, will keep them from slowing down our impulse to push forward fast like true foot-warriors ought to.
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...
