Its not the long range of snipers that people hate. Its the long range coupled with the redline protection that people hate.
The same is true of redline rail tanks.
As long as players can get kills from the redline, safe from any retaliaiton that does not include suiciding on a timer, they will always be a hated class.
Redline for Thee, but no Redline for Me.

As I said bringing them closer to the fight would only get them killed, they are not suppose to be a frontline warrior, that is why it is called Sniper Warfare, if you have to grab a sniper (no matter the skill) and find him before he finds you and take him out, easy as that. They are not redline biches or whatever people called them, they are tactically sound. Also to inform you I am not a sniper I hate snipers but they are working as intended and I am sure a CPM or a DEV would agree with me on this.
When you say "they would get killed" of course they would get killed. Everybody gets killed. Snipers are no protected class. They only are protected by a redline timer.
Ambush takes place on a large maps. Snipers are not protected by a redline, so they rarley play ambush. Thats the mentality of the majority of dust snipers. If they can't sit in one place for the duration of the match where nobody can't reach them without dying, they wont snipe. They dont shoot and move. They pick the best camping spot they can find, and sit protected not by thier skill, or awareness, or being a good sniper, but the redline.
You can bring them much closer to the fight easily. My general sniping range is about 100- 150 m behind the lines under good cover, and good cover can be found everywhere. But where I would go say 10-2 mixed between sniping and defending my self, the typical sniper would rather go 5-0 in the redline.
Redline for Thee, but no Redline for Me.
