One does not simply downgrade from PC master race to console peasant. A true console peasant is one who refuses to confess the greatness of the mater race and join the ranks.
Even having a PC does not make you part of the master race but it is a start to accepting that which is true and a beginning to the strive for greatness.

Consoles are dying rapidly to pc / console hybrids such as these.
Even console players are starting to catch on to the idea that the ability to upgrade and have real versatility instead of over paying for a console that is now forever stuck at that point. Besides who want to be limited to a couple of hundred game titles max after a couple of years when you can have the choice of thousands of games ranging from free to play to full triple A titles.

Consoles aren't dying anytime soon. The PS4 got 1 million on it's first day and continues to rise, there is still a steady support for console gaming. But I can sure that the next generation of consoles are going to adapt and you'll see a huge push for game streaming like we've seen with PS Now and Steams Console. Consoles will still be around for along time just not how we will remember them.
I would argue that Microsoft is showing signs of abandoning the console with everything they are dong with Xbox on windows 10.
Mobile gaming is hurting the casual player bases of all platforms leaving poor sales numbers with regards to overall uptake. Between that and console attempts to further monetize through subscription models developers are far more attracted to mobile and PC where they can get the most bang for their dev bucks. As more and more console hybrids come in allowing developers to optimize to base specs while being able to reach the entire PC crowd that potential revenue versus expense ratio will shift even more phasing out consoles almost entirely.
Lets face it console only players biggest argument is that they would rather just kick back with a controller and it is becoming more and more true that doing that on PC is perfectly possible without feeling like you are at a disadvantage or missing out on anything.

There are quite a few charts, graphs, sales numbers, and expert analysis who all say this. Anything I post people will just say I am cherry picking data so I would first encourage you to do a bit of googling on your own to form your own opinion. I suggest you first look into basic revenue numbers of all 3 industries as a whole to get a basic idea of the shift that is happening.

One thing I would like to add that we can all agree on is that many games including Dust have taken to copying the mobile monetization models.
While this does not directly support anything I said about mobile or PC gaming it points to a fundamental shift occurring which mobile games would seem to be at the forefront of. This means that at the end of the day revenues could be skewed by nothing more than better monetizing of customers.
To get a better understanding after looking at basic revenue numbers look into specifically tablet sales and their estimated usage for gaming. Even those numbers have started to pass up any consoles based on where you are getting your information from. These are often the casual gamers who are looking for a bit more from their experience than their phone can provide.
The simple question you have to ask yourself on that is if a person is willing to commit to a console for just the fact of being able to kick back with their controller would they not be just as or more likely to commit to a tablet for their gaming so that they can just lay down in bed as well as take their games absolutely every where.

Anyways I can totally see Microsoft dropping the console market in the next couple generations or at least stepping away support from it because they can afford the loss, but Sony is completely dependent on PS ecosystem to be alive as a company.
Sony is just as stable outside of the console game as microsoft is, if not more.
The playstation is just one of hundreds of pieces of hardware that Sony makes. They could just as easily switch to gaming tablets and create a PSN type system for those since they already create phones and tablets.
Thats not even mentioning the software and media aspects of Sony.
