Now this is a weird one and going to be based purely on players anecdotal evidence. No spreadsheets are going to prove this one way or the other, I'm just asking for opinions.
The CPM have chatted amongst themselves, continuing a debate that has also been going on since CPM1, namely just how popular is Domination actually?
Now if you tend to be like me and select all four modes in the battle finder, it can't have escaped your attention that the Domination mode comes up a lot more than the other three. Now this in itself doesn't prove its the most popular but were you to remove Domination from your selection of game modes, waiting times for a match in the other three take considerably longer and quite often Scotty can kick you from the Finder before you find a match (usually the 11 minute mark). This would certainly indicate then that Domination is the most popular mode.
But here's the thing...
Talking amongst ourselves we've all had a similar experience, namely that the majority of those we actually speak to in game and in the chat channels, really don't much care for Domination and usually have it unchecked as a choice of game mode in Dust. So why the disparity?
So I'd just like to hear your opinions on this.
Do you like Domination?
Do you have it unchecked in the finder?
Do you and the group of players you tend to play with also hear a lot from those that don't care much for Domination?
No opinion is wrong or right on this one and its not a discussion on the merits of Domination compared to the others.
Over to you.

I also have all four modes checked so I know that domination is very frequent.
Yes I like domination.
No I do not have it unchecked in the finder.
Not that much, although many times I have been requested to not do domination as a squad lead.

I like dom, it's usually the go-to mode choice. Games tend to be fast, can be really interesting and if half the team decides to hide I mean snipe in the redline it isn't as easy of a rout for the reds. Squadplay works really well in dom. Teamplay is even more effective.

Dom is the game mode you play if you've got a 20k sp in one match daily
Generally I only have it selected when I can't get into an ambush or acquisition (who runs pub skirm?)
It's a fun game mode because it focuses the action, but a bit stagnant with the lack of map changes or changes for the worse, looking at you train map redline

Hi everyone, to be honest I really like playing with domination.
In domination, most of the time, what I see is that there are always problems pairing, you know they always say the VET vs NOOB.
This is the mode that is most affected by these problems.
For what reason :
In skirmish team is dispersed and now.
In acquisition must move constantly to dominate the battle.
In ambush it is like domination, but in this must end reserves clones.
In domination it is not so in this way you have to defend a single objective lens does not change position, which makes them the strongest team dominate in battle.
You can skip this part if you wish:
But there are times, in which the dominant team will not be enough to just take the goal, but it begins to campear from the other side of the red line on points only, which does not allow players to advance the goal and haca entrapment as rats.
This happened to me. (That was two years ago, but it was one of those games that were really frustrating)
Not if it is present today, if it happens in the other game modes (not think it will happen, but there may be cases), or if you have passed them to you.
Excuse me if I sound confusing .
I can not explain, but I think most of the problems occur is by the pairing. |

Of course there are other reasons, such as to form a squad to fight , this is the best way to survive and not be trampled by the enemy, as happens now with some players.
Of course there are other reasons, such as to form a squad to fight, this is the best way to survive and not be trampled by the enemy, as happens now with some players.
Sure, I always play alone and perhaps that is one of the reasons why is this happening, but it is assumed that public battles are played are small squads or alone.
But there is so much, almost always squads corporations over 5 or 7 members or players not yet seen his prototype equipment.
Of course, there are also squads of players who are friends and that's understandable, but taking advantage of the situation with all its equipment proto is something else, players who have little and start something new. (This I believe happens in all modes of play and domination)
Also this as this is like your luck, because if you get a team:
Example :
1st Team:
5 members of 0uter.Heaven members + 3 of Negative Feedback = We will go very well -á The 2nd Team: -á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á 15 starter players + other player of a good corporation = Not going to go well.
Clear the 0H and NF member, and are used to playing team
Depending on the team you enter will decide how you will do in battle.
Of course, one can also say that they can to battle the strongest team, but I see very little chance of getting a win. (Right, I'm not sure)
Still I like domination.
Sure, I had to go to other game modes to see if I have more chances to win and to expect good luck decides.
Do not know if this helps, but good.

In my experience the mu bracket has a fairly large effect on the way a typical Domination match plays out.
On my low SP alt most of the 32 players tend to bunch up in one place and go nuts on each other. A few snipers, a few flanking scouts, an HAV or two, but the rest finds a suitable spot near the objective and has a 20 minute firefight there. When one side buckles the other gives pursuit for a few paces, but soon falls back to guard the objective.
On my main the match is generally decided after about a minute. By that time one squad has shown it's intent to dominate the match through skill or ISK investment and the other team is on the defense. Now everyone on the winning team realizes that it's going to be a stomp and pulls their best gear while the losing team starts using APEX and STD gear to mitigate their losses. The winning team drives the losers back to the redline and spawn-camps them as long as possible before the action dies down and everyone waits for the match to finish.
Both of these are slightly over-generalized, but you get the gist of it. Personally, I find the ISK payout scheme is largely to blame for this behavior. As long as putting up a fight results in ISK drain people are not going to do it. Low SP players don't have that issue as they go ISK positive either way - so they keep fighting. High SP players need to conserve ISK so they stop fighting a losing fight - unless they get their ISK elsewhere.
For the record: I generally have acquisition and domination selected. Skirmish and ambush deselected. I once in a while try a skirmish, but I don't like having to search for enemies to fight 50% of the match's duration. |

Kevall Longstride wrote:...So why the disparity? Best guess is that the people who queue for all 4 game modes are pulled into Doms because Scotty prioritises getting matches started over getting as many game modes going as possible.
A couple of suggestions: * Change Scotty to fill the other game modes first. * Allow players to set separate queue timers for each game mode, for example Skirmish 00:00, Ambush 02:01, Acquisition 04:01, Domination 11:01 <- so if Scotty finds a game within 2mins it will be a Skirm, within 4mins it will be Skirm or Bush, and within 11mins it will be Skirm, Bush, or Acq. * Do this: [Request] Scotty Map Selection, but for game modes only.

I usually play Dom when solo. I can see what needs doing and try to do it. In skirmish I usually have no idea what my teammates are doing or where I should concentrate my effort. Ambush is just ridiculous, one side stomps and it is usually just one team spawning in to get killed. Acquisition is Ok, but if there is a good squad they just dominate and they are harder to work around than in Dom. In a squad, I'll play any game and am playing factionals quite a bit.
Because, that's why.

I like Domination due to several reasons.
1) I seem to get fairly even and good games, with both teams going full out on the objective. 2) The matches are usually full, or close to it (16vs15 in some cases). 3) It's very quick to find a match. 4) The game mode is very solo-friendly, which fits my available gaming-time (usually only 1-2 games per day... If that)
With that said, I always have all four game-mode selected in battle-finder, and my server setting is always Automatic. 9/10 times (or even more) I get Domination matches when queuing.
My theory? Domination IS popular, but the matchmaker is too quick to fill games, and start up new games based on the popularity. This will cause a snowball effect, similar to what we had with Faction warfare at one point (one faction holding 100% causing no matches to be spawned).
The way I would counter this is similar to Haerr's suggestion above. Each queue has a weight attached to it, which determine the likleyhood of the mode being selected (just for you). The weight is decreased every time you get this mode, and increased every single time you don't. This will mean you might get a couple of similar games in a row (because it's a popular mode), but after a while the weights of the other modes will take precedence and another mode will be selected (with perhaps longer waiting times as a result)
After all, we have all four game modes selected for a reason. If I didn't want to play any other mode than domination, I would have deselected those to begin with. The logic (server side) needs to take this into account and rotate the game modes as described above.
This will also reduce the timer on the other game modes, as more matches of that type is spawned.

Cleaning up the pubs in New Eden
Have them unlocked by SP level, inspire some progression into the poor souls downloading Dust, beginning with Academy, unlocking Acquisition at 1mil, Ambush at 2.5, Skirmish at 5 .. bumping FW battles up to 10? this locks lower SP players out of certain gamemodes increasing the fight quality for those playing them, and saving a few mercs from getting stomped
Dom.. can be a good mode, but matchmaking too often screws you and one team has more bodies willing to hold the point, while your team shoots at each other in the redline, considering Acq is similar and imo more fun, I'd live with removing it.. But make an 8v8 search queue, maybe allow 8-man squads also, of either Dom, or mixed modes Amb/Dom/Acq unlocked at 7.5 mil SP and potentially a competetive pub match (the tryhards will go wild)
The lobbies would work smoother with some SP restriction, and I would not be against a meta lockout on beginner modes.
Academy should remain open until 5mil SP, and Academy should be a mixed queue Acq/Amb/Skir, make battles for new mercs more interesting (have caps on kills/WP/SP or something in place to lockout the farmers) + so they have something to play while unlocking these gamemodes..
This way a Dust merc at 10mil SP has, pubs Acq/Amb/Skir + 8v8 + FW, overall it may populate battles faster, and by an early SP lockout, pretty likely to increase the battle quality
If pigs could fly, we could also smash the whole thing to pieces and rebuild with a system similar to what we have seen used in Other Contracts, where you selct Pub matches based on NPC Corp Battles, also each Corp would hold a certain map rotation so by acting like we care which one we fight for, we get to select a map \o/, Progression in Pubs, Lobbies displayed in Contracts, add DK so more scrubs take part in PC, Varied CHOICES in battle finder, Low MU - Low Reward, High MU - less Low Reward, along with map selection, maybe even allow vets to deploy low MU/Academy.. with no SP/ISK/Stat earning so they can train (troll) new players (as they are now anyway) but they won't be able to profit in that server... BAM!!
So far we have pick, click, search and stomp/stomped, repeat, biomass .. So.. add something?? anything!? SOONtm
I'm playing on a 1.6 mil SP alt recently and... I feel guilty encouraging a new player to bother trying, this needs to be addressed before any other changes or battle quality will be the same either way at the end of it

To hypothesize over why the disparity:
Majority of skirm players have left to fw.
No vehicles in Ambush, cutting out a significant portion of the player base. Also notorious for officer stomping, and spawn camping (lol smart deploy). Its merit was short que times, but now, q times are too long to merit choosing it over a dom.
Dom is the most versatile for small squads, where you can have vehicles, and 4 players can have a real impact on the game, and blueberries have no choice but to congregate. Solo and without comms I can still be pivotal, because everybody is concentrated at the same point.
Aquisition is okay, but not popular. Still a lot that needs to be worked on.

Ambush would get a whole lot better if vehicles were added back ( at least in OMS), and i'm not talking about the 2 vehicle cap, i mean like it was in the first place.
My best moments in this game come from running tank squads in ambush and running into a nyain san tank squad, it would be so intense and incredibly fun to be a part of.
If vehicles do get added back to OMS then please split the two ambush modes up again, in fact, do that anway it's annoying having to deal with installations without having vehicles.

Domination just doesn't seem to work in Dust.
Although "King of the hill" is amongst my favorite modes in other shooters.
There a a lot of variables to why Dom is so unbalanced in Dust. Here are a few in my opinion
- Matchmaking: It's hard to balance teams in Dust, and Dom is an inherently one-sided game type from the onset.
- Maps: Dust maps (or or Dom points in particular) are very defensible. Meaning it's harder to dislodge an email from the point than it is to defend it.
- Dust game style: Dust just isn't really designed for this type of a game mode in a pub lobby.
Why? Dust Isnt an arena shooter. It's a tactical.shooter where a successful team needs a lot of different pieces to complete the puzzle. IE: Scans, logi's, vehicles, slayers, uplinks etc.
If one team is missing just one of those pieces, their entire team is at a huge disadvantage. Therefore loading a bunch of random into a match, it's very unlikely teams will be closely balanced, especially in Dom where seizing seizing point first is so important.
All of these things contribute to make Dom so unbalanced

My suspicion is that the players who like to be Slayers (which is the majority of the player base) select Dom since it offers the most raw action and WP/SP. Dom has the downside of being very static, and thus wears thin halfway through the battle.
My suggestions are to find ways to make Dom more dynamic (maybe have more installations drops during the fight), and offer more action by decreasing the getting-to-the-fight time across all modes (shorter spawn timers, more stamina for all suits, etc..). |

Yes, with two null canons.
Obviously if each team captures a point and turtles up then the match proceeds with null canons firing away at MCCs.
But matches won't usually conclude that way. A team might capture one point and bum rush the other with all 16. Or they might leave 5-8 on defense and push the rest ahead to challenge the other side.
We have considered the many and varied strategies teams could use to win a two objective map and there are many.
Why not try it as an event? Don't call it domination...call it something like Opposition or something. But let's give a two objective match a chance! |

Why I hate Domination
I haven't had this gamemode checked since the last big map update (warlords?) where I messed around in it for a while, was happy they finally added ladders to the fracture road tower, and proceeded to never play that game mode again.
A lot of people play it because they go in with a squad of heavies/logistics and think they are going to wreck everything without a strategy. There's more action in one place, you aren't running around the map splitting up your team, and you can effectively camp a point and be rewarded for it.
Domination was a lot better when you could flip the objective with an orbital more than once per match. Not that spamming orbitals is good, but that domination requires some sort of counterplay like that to actually be fun.

I prefer domination when i want to play totally relaxed without worrying too much about orders, and i dont care about winning or losing, since you can do little about it with a four man squad, its a matter of luck. Domination for me In a 0 to 10 rating, i-¦ll give it a 6
I always pick one mode in the finder, I always choose what i want to play based on the mood and the squadmates im with. I never leave the selection of battles at random.
Of the players i know they-¦re divided, 40% like and 60% dislikes domination.
My opinion is that domination is a more widespread game mode between the new players since it-¦s how they play in the academy. In addition Ambush requires some level to make decent numbers. Acquisition is a middle point between domination and ambush. And skirmish is more for team play. For all those reasons I believe domination is more adecuate for the ones straight out of the academy and is a more popular and accesible game mode.
Something to considerate: The players that are relatively new and casuals, that in my view are the "consumers" of the domination mode, might not visit the forums and make their voice heard, thats why you have to be very careful when assessing the results of any inquiry on the matter.
