I like this game. Yes, even the beta version, as buggy and laggy as it is.
A lot of the issues I'm having are well-documented on these forums, so instead of a bug list I'll give my general impressions. Keep in mind that I've only been in the beta for about a week.
- Maybe CCP has posted this somewhere and I've missed it, but I'm unsure of what the Devs are wishing I would test. Since I haven't found anything detailing this, I'm assuming it's general stress testing and contributing to the accumulation of other data.
- I realize that there's a 4x SP modifier in place, but even so there will be a very narrow range of fittings that I'll be able to test out before the next build (and possible reset) as an admittedly casual player. This seems counter-intuitive if the goal is to test everything available in the game, but not counter-intuitive if Devs are trying to track common skill progressions. Still, it would be fun to see all accounts get a 10M SP bump to try out near-end-game fittings.
- My impression is that the game is supposed to play more like a tactical shooter than Unreal Tournament. With the amount of strafing that 1v1 battles devolve into, it has felt like the latter more often than not.
- I feel like I really want this game to have a squad-centric feel to it, and I think that's hampered by a) the lack of the Leadership skill tree and Command dropsuits, and b) the general avoidance of voice comms by the current beta testers. I'm hoping 'a' is SoonTM, and 'b' will be moot once Corp support is enabled.
- So far, I've found the game to reward me the most when I jump into someone else's HAV as a support gunner. Vehicle Kill Assists rack up almost ridiculously fast.
- I've burned through maybe 15 Logistics suits, and as it stands it doesn't feel very rewarding. This is probably because everyone respawns as standard practice instead of waiting for help. I assume Hives and Uplinks will get used more once people start playing as a Squad in Corp matches.
- Once I had a Squad Leader who assigned objectives and rally points, and lo it was Good. I wish more people even know whether or not they were the Squad Leader, let alone actually behaved like one.
- If someone in a Command role designates an objective, my inclination is to want to be rewarded for that, outside of the standard Hack bonus. Such a system may also promote squad tactics.
- I often see someone order up a vehicle, then drive/fly away before that vehicle is fully occupied. More aggressive use of voice chat would obviously help.
And here are a couple of suggestions that I was able to generate while typing the above:
- The ability for a Squad Leader to designate a default spawn point for the Squad, along with a visual indication of this on the overview map. This may especially help in Battle Moon-style games, which I imagine will be less coordinated.
- A way to assign Squad Leaders before the start of a battle, or reassign roles in the middle of battle. This may already exist and I've just missed it.
- Being able to purchase a skill book from inside the character sheet is brilliant, but is it possible to see my Wallet total in addition to the price of the book in the purchase confirmation pop-up?
- I don't know what the range of Commands are for Squad Leaders etc., but War Point bonuses for completing assigned objectives would be rad. Suggestions for more than just Capture might be: Defend an area, Escort a vehicle, Destroy enemy Vehicle, Capture enemy Vehicle. Escort/Defend bonuses may simply add a War Point bonus to each kill?
Bottom line: I'm thoroughly enjoying myself, but want to see a higher level of teamwork in the game, and I think that will be effected by the introduction of Corps and an increased use of voice chat.
So far, so good CCP. |
