Yep, still banging the drum about this. I swear I'm going to just keep standing for CPM till I get what I want..
I realise however that you lovely Merc's out there might have ideas too about these subjects.
Now at this point it should be noted that I'm fully aware that most of this stuff should take a back seat to getting the second to second game play in the game up to scratch. UI is not the sexy big brother of shiny weapons that work as they should but it is still important and it's something of a mission with me.
It's also the backbone of the social interaction in the game. The original poor design of the audio voice chat options being a prime example of a hindrance in the game that prevented a lot of players even speaking to each other. I still for instance, have to send a 101 email about how to set up the voice comms in the game to my new starters.
I should also make a little proviso about most of the discussion that will likely happen in this thread.
Most of what is to be discussed here isn't likely to make it to the game. Elements of it might but as any games designer will tell you, UI is a swine to get right and program well. Just look at Eve, they still haven't got the Corp UI right after 12 years. So a great deal of this is likely to be viewed as wish fulfilment from the more cynical of you out there.
But I'm an optimist and I like to look at the possibilities that could present themselves to us should Dust get ported to a more powerful platform. And having some good ideas ready for that glorious moment should CCP finally say YES would put us in a lead straight from the blocks.
Now this is something that I wrote and sent to the original Executive Producer of the game, a long time ago and before the previous team in Shanghai came to be. I believe firmly that the main thing that is missing from the NPE is the context. New players need to know how one mechanic can change another and what we have now doesn't still do that fully. There have been improvements since I wrote that essay, some of them I've even had some input on but there are things that can be done better.
The addition of some Lore into the game for instance during loading screens will help give the players an understanding of what is going on in the world of New Eden. An example of this can be found in my own forum signature. Pages 7 to 11 of D-UNI Unclassified detail a brief overview of the four main Races in New Eden and a timeline with the history of New Eden. It's information like this that creates a common bond between the CCP Games set in New Eden without the Dev intensive work of building on the game play link making the players feel part of a bigger canvas. Perhaps even later adding some detailing of Valkyrie and Gunjack to deepen that sense of immersion.
Now getting deeper into the mechanics of the game itself, features such as Corp Mail and Roles are a great help to running a group of players in Dust but when your corp gets to about 50 or more players then the tools that allow you do run your corp are not up to par and players like me have to use the Eve client. For instance, in Eve I can see the full employment history of every merc in the game by simply searching their name. When the Character was created, the Corporations they've been in. I can then click on anyone of those Corps and discover which alliance they're part off, when they were founded, who by and who the Current CEO is.
All of that information, all that history if you will is actually in the metadata for YOUR Merc right now. But in Dust, you don't see it. Using my Eve client, I could grant a ranking system to my members, award them medals even give them a Title. But it would a waste of time doing so because you couldn't see it in Dust. This is I'm afraid one of the many instances of poor planning and design that the original team are responsible for. Not all of them I should add by the way but circumstance was not their friend at the time.
So the idea of a port, not matter if its known to be coming or an announcement made, excites me as to what can finally be put in the game that should have have been there from day one.
So now to open up the discussion to you guys and girls.
Is there something that bugs you about the experience of the game when not in combat? What can be done better and smarter to help new players and the Vets? What do you think should be in a port? What could be done to help app makers? I'd like your input on this so I can make sure that the Shanghai team get to hear and read about it.
Many thanks. o7

Convert an existing mode -- Ambush -- to a solo queue.
* A stomp-free environment for newbro and vet alike * Less (if any) impact on wait times in other queues * Matches would be as close to perfectly balanced as possible * The "Leave Match" problem (which exacerbates quality issues) would not exist * Would make for great place for Academy Grads to meet and mingle with other players * Would make for excellent recruiting grounds |

We used to have a nice gentle voice welcoming us to Dust - something along the lines of: "You should great promise recruit..." etc. Along with a mail from an NPC welcoming you to Dust.
Around the 1.5 era, we got a tutorial system that guided players even better. Showed them how to join battles, showed them how to fit a dropsuit, showed them how to use the skill system. Rewards were given out for doing so.
Now for some reason we have none of that. Make a new character, you see your merc quarters. That's it.
What happened?
I'll edit this post later once I figure out some more bullet points to add to this discussion. (I'm mostly irked and disappointed that we had a tutorial system and now it's gone.)

One of the things I'd like to see is the development of a corps capabilities being increased by the actions of its members, like a cross between the CP and a Corp Warbarge. The CEO or a director using CP to improve a Corp Warbarge to allow for a shared Corp Fittings screen to happen, or a percentage boost for players in the SP they get at the end of a match.
I wouldn't want such bonuses to be passive (we had enough of that kak with PC 1.0) but be rather a joint effort between the members of a corp.

I wonder this myself ^ (Edit: And you are correct with 1.5: http://dust514.com/news/blog/2013/10/npe-in-uprising-1.5/)
I agree with CCP Rattati that we don't need a tutorial which explains how to shoot, duck and sprint. But we DO need a tutorial explaining the intricate details of fittings, weapon types, bonuses etc.
The old tutorial did just that... Join a battle. Make a fitting etc. OK, it was very basic and short, but it could have been built upon rather than removed.
At the very least the daily missions should be unique for new recruites, I.e easy tasks tailored to learn the game (please ignore me if this is already the case). I can't think of anything more demotivating for a new player to see missions like "kill 40 enemies", "hack 20 prime objectives" etc, knowing they never will be able to achieve them within a day. |

Not to beat a war drum in here, but I think removing the leave battle button would stop all the people leaving after they see opposition. The only cons I have received in General Discussion were about bad player experience which new players don't know where that button is and if you need to leave then log off and re-log in. If that happens a lot, it will be punishment enough for vets to stick things out a little more and not abandon games.
Another interface helper would be to provide the squad leader commands to the new players. I have to constantly explain those to random squad leaders who are shocked when they see free WP for identifying the defense point and other components.
Something else I would like to see in the interface is to automatically dump all the non-squaded up mercs into one squad with the first merc alphabetically being assigned the squad leader. This or fix team chat again so we can invite the randoms into a squad. Players will never know about being in a squad unless they are given that opportunity. Hell, I know my chat channels aren't the popular ones anymore.
Lastly, could we be given a directional indicator on which side of our body we are being hit on when we are shot. I have spun the wrong way searching for an enemy and I can't tell which way to spin if I am in a hurry, unless I have them on passive.

One of the best things could be a quick message about joining the forums, specifically the Rookie Help page and Events. That shouldn't be too hard to implement.
My dream is for a fully functioning PvE type tutorial/walk through where you basically are on a training camp and Aurora or whatever her name is guides you through things like "this is how you fit your suits," "these are the different classes," "now try fitting this weapon, oops you don't have enough fitting space," "place [equipment] to [how it works]," "shoot that thing," "hack that thing." Simple things like that.

Well its as broad a question as I have seen from the cpm2 but what bugs me the most is never changing merc quarters or stations for local chat.
The min quarters are tiny, claustrophobic, and worst of all, being locked in one station means I can't transfer from and semi explore new Eden to interact with eve guys in local at all makes me hate every second I am in the merchant quarters. I've created alts I don't even use just for a change of scenery.
let me explore new Eden .
let me transfer consciousness anywhere in high sec space.

Note: Training other players at present is largely an altruistic undertaking that is often not worth the effort. Introducing a formal system which rewards players not only for their effort and participation but also their level of earned expertise could permanently impact new player experience. Thought the idea was worth sharing. o7
I really, really like this idea especially if the WP description can go even further and display whether those WP were generated from FW, pubs or PC. Even without that tho, this would be a huge asset to ALL players.

Kevall Longstride wrote: Is there something that bugs you about the experience of the game when not in combat?
I'm part of community for some time now, and I can see one big problem. There is just to many things that need to be improve, and as soon CCP will touch anything they will be bombarded with community 'ideas' to improve rest(including thing that they simply can not do).
So maybe instead of trying to make DUST out of combat UI playable, let's focus on improving DUST managment side in EVE, because it require less time to do something 'new' there instead of implementing current EVE mechanics to DUST and creating something 'new'. So I think EVE is more efficient space for new managing content that will improve DUST playability.
I would just alow DUST players to see EVE corp bulletins(mechanic that looks like corporation newspaper - CEO or one of Directors can write wall of text and leave it in bulletins section - everyone that is in that corporation can read it exactly like Event news right after loging in to DUST).
